George Smith Patton

George Smith Patton was an American army officer, born in San Gabriel, California, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. On his graduation in 1909 he was commissioned a second lieutenant; he advanced in rank to full general by 1945. He served as aide-de-camp to the American general John Joseph Pershing on Pershing's expedition to Mexico in 1917. In France during World War I, Patton established a tank training school and commanded a tank brigade. In 1942 and 1943, during World War II, he commanded U.S. forces in Morocco, Tunisia, and Sicily. Early in 1944 he was given command of the Third Army. Controversial throughout the war for his personal flamboyance, outspokenness, uncompromising standards, and aggressive combat strategy, he played a key role in the headlong Allied armored thrust to Germany after D-Day.

In the summer of 1944 the Third Army broke through the German defenses in the Normandy campaign and advanced rapidly across France; in March 1945 it crossed the Rhine River into Germany and also moved toward Austria. After the war Patton served as military governor of Bavaria, but because of criticism of his lenient policy toward the former enemy, he was relieved of the post. He was named head of the Fifteenth Army late in 1945, shortly before he was fatally injured in a traffic accident.

Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce was the 14th president of the United States. He came to office in the decade before the Civil War. Although his roots and home were in the Northern, largely antislavery, state of New Hampshire, Pierce sided with the South on the slavery issue. His position on this issue caused him, in the words of a friend, “to immolate himself on the altar of slavery.” Yet Pierce was devoted to the federal Union of the states, his chief aim being to uphold the Constitution of the United States as a sacred and therefore unchangeable document and to avoid civil war at all costs. Although he was a weak, but well-meaning and honest, man with a social nature, few presidents have led so tragic a personal life or have left office so publicly hated and discredited. However, it is uncertain that even a president of superior ability could have dealt effectively with the great problems of the pre-Civil War era.

Richard I

Richard I, called Coeur de Lion or Lion-Hearted was king of England from 1189 to 1199, third son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, born in Oxford. When he was an infant, Richard was betrothed to a daughter of the French king Louis VII, and in 1172 he was given the duchy of Aquitaine in France, his mother's inheritance. His early years were spent in warring against his father to protect his own interests; he emerged a brilliant soldier. In 1189 he became king of England and shortly thereafter set out on the Third Crusade. He was accompanied by the young Philip II, king of France, son of Louis VII. The Crusade proved a failure almost from the start, mainly because of the lack of harmony between the two kings. In Sicily Richard quarreled with Philip and refused to marry Philip's sister as planned. Instead he married Berengaria of Navarre on Cyprus, which he conquered in 1191. After capturing Acre from the Saracens that same year, Richard executed 2700 Muslim prisoners of war. It was Richard's personal valor in the Holy Land, however, rather than his ruthlessness, that made his name famous in legend. Conflict over policy in the Holy Land resulted in a break between the two, and Philip returned to France alone. Richard spent months in indecisive contests against Saladin, sultan of Egypt and Syria, before making a truce by which Jerusalem was left in Saladin's hands. Captured en route to England by Leopold V, duke of Austria, Richard was handed over to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI. He was released in 1194 only after paying a heavy ransom. Richard returned to England and there made peace with his brother, John, later king of England, who in his absence had been conspiring with Philip to usurp the English throne. Leaving the government of England to the care of the able administrator Hubert Walter, archbishop of Canterbury, Richard went to France in 1194 to wage war against the French king. Campaigns in defense of his European lands continued for five years. Victor in most of the warfare in which he engaged, Richard was fatally wounded by an arrow during an insignificant skirmish in 1199.

As king, Richard had chosen able ministers, to whom he left most matters of administration. Under his rule, however, England suffered heavy taxation, levied to support his expeditions. Sometimes cruel, sometimes magnanimous, and always courageous, Richard was well versed in the knightly accomplishments of his age and was also a poet. He was to become the hero of many legendary tales.

Richard II

Richard II was king of England from 1377 to 1399, whose reign was marked by national disunity and civil strife. A younger son of Edward, Prince of Wales, and Joan, called the Fair Maid of Kent, Richard was born January 6, 1367, in Bordeaux, France. He was created Prince of Wales in 1376, the year of his father's death, and was placed in the care of his uncle John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster. In 1377, on the death of his grandfather, King Edward III, Richard became ruler of England, then a country devastated by plague and oppressed by heavy taxes, the result of a war with France. Parliament, which had obtained greater power in the last years of Edward III's reign, now sought to secure control of the government, but was opposed by John of Gaunt and his followers. The speedy suppression of Tyler's Rebellion in 1381 was largely the result of Richard's courage and daring. A year later, at the age of 15, Richard married Anne of Bohemia, daughter of the Holy Roman emperor Charles IV, and began to seek the downfall of the great nobles who controlled Parliament and prevented him from acting independently. Led by Richard's uncle Thomas of Woodstock, duke of Gloucester, in 1388 a coterie of noblemen known in history as the lords appellant “appealed” or accused Richard's adherents of treason, banishing some and having others executed. The following year Richard, with the help of John of Gaunt, succeeded in asserting his authority.

Trying to reestablish English authority in Ireland, Richard led an expedition to the country in 1394; that same year his queen died. In 1396 a marriage treaty was concluded between Richard and a French princess, Isabella. In 1397 Richard had Gloucester arrested and imprisoned at Calais, where he died, perhaps murdered. He also exiled John of Gaunt's son, Henry Bolingbroke, duke of Hereford, who later became Richard's successor as Henry IV, and executed or banished others of the lords appellant. On his return from a second military expedition to Ireland in 1399 Richard found that Bolingbroke had returned from exile and placed himself at the head of a formidable army. Richard was captured by Bolingbroke in Wales and brought captive to London, where on September 30, 1399, he formally resigned his crown. On the following day his abdication was ratified by Parliament, which then confirmed Bolingbroke as King Henry IV. Richard was secretly confined in Pontefract Castle, where he either died of starvation or was murdered in February 1400.

Richard III

Richard III was king of England from 1483 to 1485, of the house of York. Richard was born on October 2, 1452, in Fotheringhay Castle, youngest son of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd duke of York, and was named duke of Gloucester in 1461. Richard fought for his brother, later King Edward IV, under the Yorkist banner during the Wars of the Roses. On the death of Edward in 1483, Richard took over the care of Edward's young heir, King Edward V, and the administration of the kingdom. Richard soon overthrew the unpopular party of the Woodvilles, relatives of the queen mother, who aimed to control the government. Parliament then declared that Richard was the rightful king, on the grounds that the marriage of Edward IV with Elizabeth Woodville had been illegal because he had contracted earlier to marry another woman. Richard, to ensure his position as king, confined Edward and his brother Richard to the Tower of London. There, some time afterward, both nephews were put to death. Except for later supposition, no substantial evidence exists that Richard had them assassinated.

The new king courted popularity with considerable success. He promoted English interests abroad and involved himself in domestic reform. Following the death of the young princes, however, public favor turned away from Richard and toward Henry, Earl of Richmond, who was the head of the rival house of Lancaster. On August 7, 1485, Henry landed at Milford Haven, Wales, collecting allies as he advanced toward England. Richard hastened to meet him, and the hostile armies faced each other on Bosworth Field. Richard fought valiantly but was defeated and slain, and the Earl of Richmond became Henry VII, the first Tudor king of England.

Although Richard, the last king of the house of York, did usurp the throne, little doubt exists that his unscrupulousness has been overemphasized by his enemies and by Tudor historians seeking to strengthen the Lancastrian position. His baseness is strongly exaggerated in Shakespeare's play Richard III.

Robert Bruce

Robert Bruce was liberator, and, as Robert I, king of Scotland from 1306 to 1329. He was originally named Robert de Bruce, and to distinguish him from his father and grandfather, who had the same name, he is often referred to as Robert de Bruce VIII. As earl of Carrick he paid homage to King Edward I of England, who, in 1296, defeated King John de Baliol and thereafter refused to acknowledge another king of Scotland. Bruce later abandoned Edward's cause and joined other Scottish leaders in taking up arms for the independence of his country. In 1299, the year after the Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace was defeated by Edward at Falkirk, Bruce, then still in favor with Edward, was made one of the four regents who ruled the kingdom in the name of Baliol. In 1305 he was one of those consulted in the decision to make Scotland a province of England. In 1306 he met an old enemy, the Scottish patriot John Comyn, who was the nephew of Baliol; a quarrel occurred, and Bruce stabbed Comyn. Bruce proclaimed his right to the throne, and on March 27, 1306, he was crowned king at Scone.

Bruce was deposed, however, in 1307 by Edward's army and forced to flee to the highlands and then to the little island of Rathlin on the coast of Antrim. In his absence all his estates were confiscated, and he and his followers were excommunicated. He continued to recruit followers, however, and in less than two years he wrested nearly all of Scotland from the English. Bruce again defeated the English in 1314 in the Battle of Bannockburn, twice invaded England, and in 1323 concluded with King Edward II of England a truce for 13 years. After the accession of King Edward III in 1327, war again broke out, and the Scots won again. In 1328 they secured a treaty recognizing the independence of Scotland and the right of Bruce to the throne.

In his later years Bruce was stricken with leprosy and lived in seclusion at Cardross Castle, on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde, where he died. He was succeeded by his son, David II. Bruce's nephew, Robert II, who succeeded David, was the first king of the Stuart house of English and Scottish royalty.

Franklin D Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States. Roosevelt served longer than any other president. His unprecedented election to four terms in office will probably never be repeated; the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, passed after his death, denies the right of any person to be elected president more than twice.

Roosevelt held office during two of the greatest crises ever faced by the United States: the Great Depression of the 1930s, followed by World War II. His domestic program, known as the New Deal, introduced far-reaching reforms within the free enterprise system and prepared the way for what is often called the welfare state. His leadership of the Democratic Party transformed it into a political vehicle for American liberalism. Both in peacetime and in war his impact on the office of president was enormous. Although there had been strong presidents before him, they were the exception. In Roosevelt’s 12 years in office strong executive leadership became a basic part of United States government. He made the office of president the center of diplomatic initiative and the focus of domestic reform.

Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States and one of the strongest and most vigorous presidents in United States history. In battles between business and labor, Roosevelt extended the power both of the presidency and of the federal government to protect what he saw as the public interest. He enjoyed the responsibilities of world power and greatly expanded United States involvement in world affairs. His domestic social and economic reforms were the first federal attempts to deal with the problems created by a modern industrial society.

Roosevelt became the youngest man ever to be president when he succeeded the assassinated William McKinley in 1901 at the age of 42. However, he was older than John F. Kennedy when he was elected in his own right. Roosevelt was adored by the majority of Americans. The reason, he thought, was that he “put into words what is in their hearts and minds but not their mouths.”

Clara Josephine Schumann

Clara Josephine Schumann was a German pianist, born in Leipzig, and trained by her father, Friedrich Wieck. A pianist from the age of eight, she was already well known in Europe when, in 1840, she married the composer Robert Schumann over the strenuous objection of her father. She introduced many of Schumann's piano works, including his Piano Concerto. After Schumann's death, she became one of the great pianists of the time, touring almost constantly to support her family. She did much to promote the music of her lifelong friend Johannes Brahms. She edited the complete works of Schumann and from 1872 to 1892 taught at the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt.

Beginning in 1959 Sutherland specialized in coloratura roles of 18th- and 19th-century Italian operas, particularly the works of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti. She made her New York City debut in 1961 in the rarely heard Beatrice di Tenda by Bellini, produced in a concert version by the American Opera Society. In addition to her coloratura virtuosity, her voice was noted for a tonal warmth rooted in a supreme technique. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1979, and retired from singing in 1990. In 1997 Sutherland published her autobiography, A Prima Donna’s Progress.

William Taft

William Howard Taft was the 27th president of the United States and tenth chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Taft was the only person in U.S. history to hold those two offices. He succeeded President Theodore Roosevelt, who expected Taft to continue his crusade for reform. Instead Taft was more conservative, and the domestic reforms of the early 20th century slowed. Taft also replaced Roosevelt's aggressive foreign policy with one that was more measured. Taft's conservatism irritated Roosevelt, split the Republican Party, and ensured a Democratic victory for Woodrow Wilson in the presidential election of 1912.

Zachary Taylor

Zachary Taylor was the 12th president of the United States. He was a career army officer who was elected on the strength of the victories he won in the Mexican War. As a soldier he was a courageous and inspired leader who could always be found where the fighting was thickest. He never lost a battle. His men admired him and called him Old Rough and Ready. He was disdainful of military pomp and formal dress and was known for his plainness of manner and appearance. Taylor was president for little more than a year. Although he lacked political experience, he resolutely faced up to the principal issue of the day, the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Although he was a Southern slaveholder, he was first and foremost a supporter of the Union, upholding the national interest over sectional interests. Like President Andrew Jackson, Taylor refused to compromise his principles to appease the South. His death paved the way for a succession of issue-straddling presidents whose attempts to mollify both sides at best delayed, and did not prevent, sectional conflict.

Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Hilda Thatcher was the first woman to hold the office of prime minister of the United Kingdom. She was born Margaret Hilda Roberts in Grantham and educated at the University of Oxford, where she earned degrees in chemistry; from 1947 to 1951 she worked as a research chemist. She married Denis Thatcher in 1951. In 1953, having studied for the bar, she became a tax lawyer. Joining the Conservative party, Thatcher was elected to the House of Commons in 1959. As minister of education and science from 1970 to 1974 under Edward Heath, she provoked a storm of protest by abolishing free milk in the schools. After the Conservative defeat in 1974, she challenged Heath for the leadership of the party and won the post in 1975. Four years later she led the party to victory, vowing to reverse Britain's economic decline and to reduce the role of government. In 1982 Argentine forces occupied the nearby Falkland Islands, which were claimed by both Argentina and the United Kingdom. Thatcher's government sent a task force to the Falklands that defeated the Argentines. Bolstered by the success of her Falkland Islands policy, Thatcher led the Conservatives to a sweeping victory in the parliamentary elections of June 1983. In October 1984 she narrowly escaped injury when a bomb planted by Irish extremists exploded in Brighton's Grand Hotel during a party conference. Victorious in the June 1987 elections, she became the first British prime minister in the 20th century to serve three consecutive terms. During Thatcher's years as prime minister, unemployment rose, almost doubling in her first term. Thatcher opposed the socialist programs of the Labour party and worked to decrease the role of the government in the economy. She privatized some nationalized industries and social programs, including education, housing, and health care. In 1990 controversy over Thatcher's tax policy and over her reluctance to commit the United Kingdom to full economic integration with Europe inspired a strong challenge to her leadership. She resigned in November and was succeeded as party leader by John Major.

Harry S Truman

Harry S Truman was the 33rd president of the United States. Truman initiated the foreign policy of containing Communism, a policy that was the hallmark of the Cold War. He continued the welfare policies established under his predecessor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman helped to centralize power in the executive branch, a trend begun under Roosevelt. Truman’s willingness to accept responsibility for difficult decisions made him one of the most controversial of presidents. Throughout his administration, Truman failed to rally congressional support for most of his program of domestic legislation, called the Fair Deal. However, he did secure sufficient legislative backing to produce an outstanding record in foreign affairs, especially in meeting what most Americans felt was the challenge posed by the rising power of the Communist bloc. During Truman’s administration the United States became a charter member of the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; sponsored important foreign policy initiatives known as the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and Point Four Program; and assumed a leading role in the fighting in the Korean War.

Mary I

Mary I, called Mary Tudor, was queen of England from 1553 to 1558. Mary was born in London on February 18, 1516, the daughter of Henry VIII of England, by his first wife, Catherine of Aragón. On the death of her half brother, Edward VI, on July 6, 1553, she became the legal heir to the throne. Lord High Chamberlain John Dudley, duke of Northumberland, however, favored the succession of his daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey. He proclaimed her queen on July 10, but the country supported Mary.

Mary began her reign by sweeping away the religious innovations of her father. Mass was restored without opposition and the authority of the pope reestablished, but Parliament refused to restore the church lands seized under Henry VIII. Mary, however, restored the property that the Crown still possessed. Even more disastrous was her marriage in 1554 to Philip II, king of Spain. The engagement was greeted in England by a formidable rebellion under the leadership of Sir Thomas Wyatt to depose Mary and put her half sister, Elizabeth, later Elizabeth I, on the throne. Philip was an uncompromising Roman Catholic and unpopular in England. At his order, Mary joined in a war against France, with the result that Calais, the last remnant of the English conquests won during the Hundred Years' War with France, was lost in 1558.

The ferocity with which Mary's personal character has been assailed by certain writers must be ascribed to religious zeal. She was called Bloody Mary because of a large number of religious persecutions that took place during her reign; almost 300 people were condemned to death as a result of trials for heresy. Mary died in London on November 17, 1558, and was succeeded by Elizabeth I.

John Tyler

John Tyler was the tenth president of the United States, and the first vice president to become president upon the death of the chief executive. Since the Constitution of the United States was vague on the subject, Tyler made the decision to have himself sworn in as president instead of considering himself acting president and calling for new elections. This action was bitterly denounced in Tyler's own day, but it set a precedent that has been followed ever since. Although he is considered one of the minor U.S. presidents, Tyler deserves to be remembered for this precedent, as well as for the annexation of Texas, the one great achievement of his administration.
