Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, was the 1st to be discovered in modern times. This blue-green gas giant, which was discovered by William Herschel on 13th March 1871, is an eccentric oddity in our Solar System. It has an orbit of 84 years and stays in each sign for about 7 years. The rotational axis of Uranus points east and west instead of the more common north and south poles, and rotates in reverse direction from most of the other planets. With these oddities in mind it should come as no surprise to find that Uranus rules the eccentric and revolutionary.

Not much is known about Greek mythological figure Uranus. He was the god of the heavens and husband to Gaea, goddess of the Earth. Gaea, exhausted by the numerous pregnancies inflicted on her by Uranus, asked her children to free her from this burden. All of her children declined to accept responsibility except her youngest, Cronus (Saturn), who was himself overthrown by his own son. Cronos took the sickle given to him by his mother, caught his father unawares and cut off his testicles. He then threw them into the sea and ascended the throne.

In astrology Uranus is considered to be a higher octave of the Sun and rules all that is revolutionary and freethinking. Perhaps this shows that whilst we are born under solarian influences, if we are evolving spiritually and intellectually we will begin to take on more Uranian characteristics. In addition to the Sun, Uranus appears to be a higher level of Mercury as Mercury reflects our more immediate thinking processes while Uranus gives us innovative ideas that inspire genius. Uranus in Aries or the 1st House
