It is according to the band, a better representation of each members' philosophy of life - a kind of derivation of the 60's "Make Love, Not War" syndrome made indigenous by the tagalog word "Kapatid." This referring not to some exclusive gang of brothers but instead to universal brother and sisterhood. This kind of view has helped members, particularly Nathan and Karl, lay their ghost to rest. There's no reason to fight and bicker. "Kapatid naman tayo," Nathan demonstrates, chording at his own aparent cleverness and washing his laughters with another swig of beer.
To emphasize their commitment to the band, Nathan, Karl, Chico, and Ira all have the word "Kapatid" tattoed in ancient Tagalog script on various places on their arms and bodies. They rehearse an average of three times per week at Ira's house, which is near the bustling and often traffic congested intersection of EDSA and Santolan. And they have set rules for themselves: rehearsal attendance is a must if you want to play the subsequent live gigs and not getting completely shit-faced before and during practice.
Although Kapatid's self titled first album will likely to be completed within the month of August and released independently, the road back from music limbo has been a kind of pilgrim's progress for many of the members. Veterans Nathan and Karl were, for a time, ready to give up music completely, and Ira, having left Passage, was planning to leave the Philippines for good and start new life in the United States.
Meeting was easy enough, since most of the members have known each other for many years. As in his previous band, Nathan, already working closely with Karl, acted as a kind of connector for the others, itroducing Chico to the guitar and then bringing in into the band; meeting J-Hoon at a concert sponsored by http://www.PinoyCentral.com; playing alongside Paul in Pinikpikan; and inviting Ira to join the band during a fashion show they both participated in as models.....
Kapatid apparently a sextet-Karl Roy on vocals, Nathan Azarconon bass, Ira Cruz and Chico Molina on guitars, DJ-Jhoonon drums, and the casual appearance of Paul Zialcita on bongos- is a mutation of an earlier attempts of Karl and Nathan to build a new beginning after the dissolution of POT and the latter's departure from Rivermaya. The project sneered at by Liza Nakpil as a "band of druggies," was called L.S.D., which was in fact not a tribute to hallicinugen, but an acronym for LOVE, SURRENDER and DEVOTION. Still the obvious association to drug use, for which band members would say in mocks jest that they "would" "neither confirm or deny" and the less than clever permutation of POT to LSD, led Karl and Nathan, then jamming with another set of musicians from other groups such as Third World Project and Radio Active Sago, to trash the name in favor of the more earthy sounding "KAPATID."
