The Drum Media article

Let's let's let's get spazzy gonna have a rock'n'roll party. Not since "Eye of the Tiger" has a song been so incessantly bouncing around my skull. On busses, in the queue at the bank, and in ever more inappropriate and embarrassing situations. (surgery ... my local ...brothel ... mmm) Ladies and gentleman The Spazzys refuse to leave the building! Bassist for the all-girl three pice Lucy, gives us here at The Drum The World according to Spazzy.

Drum Media: Love the name by the way - how did you come up with it?
Luct: Probably like 10 minutes.

DM: How and when did you get together?
L: We used to go and see rock'n'roll bands all the time. So we'd get drunk and we're kinda retarded and we just shotgunned our instruments none of us could play anything and we really really sucked and our friends were like "keep going you're really shit".

DM: So what was the musical vision for the band?
L: Ramones are the reason we thought that this could be possible 'cos thier songs were so simple so we just put three chords together and ended up writing really Ramones-core songs, bubble-core and then just from listening to music together and singing together we just started going more with the Beach Boys and the Ronettes thing like the 60's pop. We've been told that we're the missing link where the Ramones ripped off 60's pop and we're 60's pop influenced by Ramones - you know what I mean?

DM: I know what you mean Lucy - very post-modern.
L: ...yeah.

DM: So did Phil Spector do it?
L: Definately. We've seriously been contemplating sending him our CD in jail. I think he would love us man.

DM: What were the early jams like?
L: (laughs) Oh no you don't wanna know.

DM: Yes we do Lucy.
L: Alright we were in Alice's (drums) garage and we were drunk the night before said we were going to form a band so the next morning we turn up at Alice's house and we just sat there and figured out a song and Kat (vocalist/guitarist) tried to play the guitar but she had it upside down and Alice's mum came in going "this is terrible" she madw us unplug and we figured it was because Kat didn't know how to hold a guitar and we were like "dude turn it the other way" and it sounded a little bit better and we didn't have tuners and it was really really bad.

DM: What was the first song that you wrote that you thought we've got something here?
L: We wrote Paco Dosen't Love Me. He's this boy he playes drums in an Italian band called Retarded. He's kind of this ugly boy but kinda cool and Alice met him and she was trying to make moves and he was so not interested and we were like "are you crazy" so that was the first song we wrote.

DM: How about the first few gigs - nervous or did you knock 'em dead?
L: Alright our first gig was three monthe from that day and it was the 5,6,7,8's from Japan. So we had three shows with them and they were sold-out. Luke our friend who books The Tote (Melbourne venue) we'd just turn up every weekend and get drunk and he said I've got a gig for ya. We were really shit we had like eight songs twelve minute set and one of the songs was Happy Birthday. But the 5,6,7,8's were lovely they were up the front trying to headbang to a beat that we couldn't hold. We were terrible. But I've still got the set-list.

DM: Is it tacked to your wall?
L: It totally is.

DM: So what's the rock'n'roll dream for The Spazzys then?
L: I could say to people to take over the world but I reckon to just get people listening to old rock'n'roll man and start a band and to get them to find what music they're into and just give it ago. 'Cos it's the greatest thing it's totally saved our lives.

DM: Anything else before we finish Lucy?
L: Just make me sound witty-ok.
