SOLDIER IDENTIFIED IN FATAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENT ON HWY. 190

Fort Hood officials have identified Pfc. Samuel D. Coggan, 23, as the soldier who died in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy. 190 west of Killeen on Wednesday night (Nov. 20).

The accident occurred about 8 p.m. Wednesday night while Coggan was driving west on Hwy. 190 near the Bell Tower Drive exit, where his vehicle reportedly went off the embankment at the exit and overturned several times.  Coggan was pronounced dead at the scene by Coryell County Justice of the Peace Bill Price.  A passenger traveling in the vehicle with Coggan was taken to Darnall Army Community Hospital at Fort Hood, where he was treated and released.

Coggan, a native of Leesburg, Fla., was an information systems operator assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 1st Cavalry Division.  He had entered the Army in November 2000, and had been assigned at Fort Hood since July 2001.

The accident is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
