Genetics I- Green Peas from Yellow
Nuts and Bolts- Learn this or forever hold your bagh-nakhs
So how the bloody ‘ell do you get to be a 43? Easy, be a Herald’s kid! 90% of Heralds are 43s.
But then how did Heralds get to be 43s? @_@ And how come Youji has a kid that is? Because you need TWO genes to be a 43.
*Gene #1- Quintessence or Trigger Gene (Q*)
*Gene #2- Type or Caste Gene (T*)
Quintessence Genes
Q* genes are somewhat rare
genes which, on their own, do little or nothing.
In genetic testing, they are
most often mistaken for redundant stop codons (the ends of other DNA
codes).
An ability or trait associated
(but not on a 100% basis) with a Q* is called a tick. Ticks are quite
uncommon.
A person with just a Q* gene is
NOT a 43
There are quite a few Q* genes...
b Common Lamia (L)- first identified, no tick, dominant bYuki-Onna (Y)- common in Japan, no tick, dominant bMorgana (M)- common in the British Isles, no tick, co-dominant with Vivian bVivian (V)- common in the US, believed to have a tick which causes a lack of finger nails yet boosts one’s psychic abilities. Co-dominant with Morgana. bRose (R)- found in many Shire Heralds, dominant |
Not-So-Common Azriella (az)- recessive, no tick b Augusta (au)- recessive, tick for blue eyes b Cynthia (cy)- recessive, no tick b Usagi (u)- suspected variant of Cynthia, believed to have a deleterious tick b Molly (m)- recessive, no tick b Eurydiche (~)- mutation on any given Q*, recognized by the Eurydiche Tick. Dominant when incurred. But still rare. |
The Eurydiche Tick ~
Admittedly, it would not only be
rare for the same mutation to crop up in multiple, unrelated people, let
alone NOTICED in all of them, but the Eurydiche Tick is such that it could
no escape the interest of all possibly interested parties (The Officers of
the Su-dono, Estet).
Basically, it prevents the loss of redundant stop codons (at the ends of
chromosomes) over time. NANI!? That was a mouthful. Ok… umm… let’s make this
easy. Guess who HAS a Eurydiche tick!
