Cho Hakkai is the caring, compassionate one of the Sanzo party. Majority of the time, he has a smile on his face. But that smile is just a ruse for the pain and torment he hides in his heart. Three years before the story, he was known as Cho Gonou. Gonou was a school teacher, a very intelligent school teacher. He lived with his girlfriend Kanan. Kanan and Gonou were actually orphaned siblings. (This simple fact was edited out of the anime.) Things were fine and well between Gonou and Kanan. That is until one day, demons attacked the village and kidnapped Kanan. The villagers didn't even put up a fight out of fear of losing their own lives. When Gonou asked them why, they plainly said, "I wasn't going to give up my daughter for a couple of orphans." Gonou didn't like hearing that. So, he set out on his own to get Kanan back. He first killed the Black Crow clan, then set out to get the Hyakugan Maoh clan. Gonou succeeded getting to Kanan, but he was injured and covered in blood. He told Kanan that they were going to go home and he would protect her. But she told him that she was pregnant with "that monster's child" meaning Hyakugan Moah. So, she took the very same dagger Gonou used to kill every demon in the castle and killed herself. Gonou could only watch in horror, not being able to save her. On his knees, injured and blaming himself for Kanan killing herself, Gonou heard someone behind him. It was Chin Yisou, the son of Hyakugan Maoh. Chin Yisou taunted Gonou about how Kanan was his sister yet his lover. Gonou, in a rage of anger, went to attack Chin Yisou. But Chin Yisou in turn stabbed Gonou, injuring Gonou even more. Chin Yisou starting blabbing on about some legend, "Once one is bathed in the blood of a thousand demons, he becomes a demon himself." While Gonou was down from the injury Chin Yisou inflicted upon him, Chin Yisou cut his arm and allowed the blood to fall on Gonou, saying he didn't know if he was the one thousandth demon or not. Sure enough, Chin Yisou was the one thousandth demon's blood to fall on Gonou's body, instantly transforming Gonou into a demon. Cho Gonou then stabbed Chin Yisou in the stomach with his arm, killing Chin Yisou. Gonou wandered aimlessly out of Hykugan Moah's castle. Where he collapsed to the ground, only to be found by Sha Gojyo. Gojyo took him in without question and nursed him back to health. After about a month, a monk came to arrest Cho Gonou for killing one thousand demons (and five hundred humans, but that was edited out of the anime). The monk called Genjo Sanzo, took Gonou to the Palace of the Setting Sun in Chang'an. The Sanbutsushin allowed Gonou to change his name and forgive the crimes he commited. So, Cho Gonou changed his name to Cho Hakkai. Cho Hakkai is a strong fighter. He can use his chi to heal people's wounds and to form attacks called, Qigong. He has a small dragon called Hakuryu that transforms into the jeep they travel in. |
