National Flag Archive
Throughout our long and proud history, our nation has used a number of flags to portray our national pride. This page depicts some of the flags used to denote our sovereignty and the history surrounding them.

The above flag was the first to be designed for the Kingdom of Humanity, sometime in the late 1870's. The flag was designed by the Meads family and is said to have had special meaning to the Royal Family and their close advisers. Unfortunately the true meaning of this flag has been lost to history but it is thought to depict the waves of the Sea of Humanity that crash onto the archipelago.

The inaugural constitution of the Kingdom of Humanity, composed by King James I in 1881, states;
The Flag of the Kingdom of Humanity shall be Green, White and Black, in any combination of equal proportion, green for life and white and black for the two sides of every matter -- except the principles and ideals of this Constitution which are symbolised by the green of life upon which this Constitution is founded.

In 1885, the above flag became the official national flag by Royal Decree. The flag depicts a horizontal bicolour of blue over white with a gold crown in the center surmounted by a white flying Saunders Gull. In this design, the flag represents the Royal Family (the crown), the national faunal symbol (Saunders Gull) the blue sky and the white sands of the archipelago.

The national seal read "East is West and West is East and I Am the Twain That Will Make It So."

As the call for a Republic grew louder throughout the country, there were competitions to design a new flag. The above flag was chosen as the winner from many applicants. The winning designer, incidentally, was Mr Christopher Schneider who was later to become Morac-Songhrati-Meads inaugural Chief 0f State.

This is how Mr Schneider described the design of the flag;
"The flag has a seal showing the traditional yin-yang emblem surrounded by the eight kwae found in Korean symbolism and some inscriptions described in French as 'The extirpation of hypocrisy from the surface of the earth must be done; east is west and west is east and this state wishes to render to the elder the great and good peace of love of the state of Morac-Songhrati-Meads.'"

Taking into account the above quote and the fact Morac is spelt incorrectly on the flag, it is safe to assume that Mr Schneider was under the influence of what historians sometimes refer to as "alcohol".

Whatever the state of Mr Schneider's mind, the flag was adopted as the national symbol of the newly formed Republic of Morac-Songhrati-Meads in 1964.

Article II of the constitution of the republic states

"... The National emblem is a flag half yellow and half black with two figures in the center in red juxtaposed with a white star in the center of each figure."

This flag was the official national flag until 1968 when it was replaced by our current flag, which you can see on our National Flag Page

Following the invasion and illegal occupation of our island home by various nations, the Government-in-Exile deciding to authorise another flag that could be flown at official functions in place of the national flag, which was banned from flying by the six nations that invaded our country. This was to avoid any possible diplomatic incidents that may have occurred by flying the official national flag. However, this flag is rarely flown now as Songhrato prefer to fly our official flag in defiance of the bans placed on it by nations like China, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The flag consists of a red field with a very broad navy blue border on all four sides, in the center a highly stylised Saunders Gull.

We thank Mr David Martucci Esq. of FOTW Flags Of The World for his careful archiving of our nation's history.
