Scouting Report
2003 Season
Nomar Garciaparra had another great season for Boston in 2003,
although he picked a most unfortunate time to slump, driving in only
one run in 12 postseason games. In the regular season, he finished
second in the American League in runs scored and was a contestant for
the batting title before a late-season slump took him out of the
running.
Hitting
What's the use in "waiting for your pitch" when you can hit anything?
One couldn't blame Garciaparra for thinking that way-he swings at the
first pitch more than any major league hitter, but he's also one of
the most dangerous first-pitch hitters in baseball. With strong wrists
and great hand-eye coordination, it's tough to get any pitch past him,
even with two strikes. In the past two years, he's pulled the ball and
hit it in the air more often, which has cost him some points on his
average but hasn't paid dividends in the power department. Regardless,
he still hits the ball hard as consistently as anyone in the game.
Baserunning & Defense
Garciaparra's throwing arm is so strong that it effectively increases
his already above-average range at short. He throws on the run as well
as any infielder in baseball, and since he doesn't need to set himself
before making a throw from the hole, he is able to go harder to his
right than most shortstops. Of course, making the play that way takes
not only a strong arm but also quick feet and tremendous agility.
Garciaparra also was a legitimate stolen-base threat last year,
swiping 19 bases in 24 tries.
2004 Outlook
A lifelong member of the Red Sox, Garciaparra is going into his walk
year. Trade rumors already have surfaced, and they could become an
ongoing distraction for the entire team if an extension isn't reached.
The possibility of the Red Sox and one of their defining players
parting ways is sure to spark emotion all around. It may be the type
of situation that would weigh heavily on any player. |
