One of the greatest exponents of Rock 'n' Roll in the early 60's was Elvis Presley. Presley was a truck driver and singer from Tupelo, MS, whose style and sex appeal revolutionized Rock 'n' Roll into a financial success. Record Companies considered it a fad and began to search for new artists of Rock 'n' Roll.
Rock Music surged to popularity in 1962 with the emergence of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones bringing British influence into the American Rock scene. These British bands brought about a return to blues orientated Rock with loud and electric sounds.
In 1965 rock took an important turn at Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan, a song writer of social protest lyrics appeared playing an electric guitar backed by a band. This sparked the emergence of poetic lyrics in Rock songs.

In the 1960s much of the music reflected upon the tensions of the Vietnam war. The content of rock songs were directed at rebellion, protest, sex, and drugs. Many groups tried to emulate drug experiences with their music.

In 1969 one of the most successful and peaceful rock festivals took place. Woodstock was held near Bethel, NY in August.
