The 90s brought the expansion of alternative rock and began leaning toward more abstract rock styles. Industrial Rock was making a return and Gothic rock emerged.
However the 90s was the decade of heavy metal, though Techno ruled the dance scene, heavy metal ruled the rock scene with groups such as Metallica and Guns and Roses. Heavy metal also spawned many subgenres such as Funk-Metal with bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine.
The 90s was also an era of intellectual rock. No song could be just rhythm and melody but be twisted and deranged.
