During the 1980s music videos became popular in promoting music and artists. Several bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam continued to preserve punk rock, but most of the genre evolved into hardcore rock and the west coast saw a rise in hardcore violence.
The 80s also saw an emergence in some new genres with its roots in Beach-Punk with bands such as Minutemen and Firehouse.

Independant Record Labels also led to the development of grunge rock from the bands of the NY area. Developments in the mid-west also led to a return to the true rock song format.
In the meantime another street phenomenon of the ghettos, hip hop, revolutionized the music scene and bands such as Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Public Enemy crossed over to the rock audience.
