History: Paillard's father was a magistrate, and, from the very beginning of his youth, wouldn't allow him to take any other job. This suited the young Paillard well, as, being of a very slight stature, he had always longed for a form of authority he could hold over the other boys his age, who frequently mocked him.

At sixteen, his father was satisfied with his education and sent him to understudy a freind of his, the warden at Madelonnettes prison. And at 18 he was on the street as a gendarme.
