*As Good As I Was To You*

Author: SheridanLF

[Author’s Note: Song by Lorrie Morgan]

She drove up to the restaurant
Where they use to dine

Sheridan looked over at her friend, placing a gently hand on her arm. This was a bad idea; most definitely the worst one that Gwen had ever had in her entire life. “Gwen, are you sure you want to do this? I mean, is he really worth the embarrassment?”

Sighing, she looked at the little known restaurant where her former fiancé now sat with his little tramp. Ethan had made his choice, proposed to the other woman and called their entire relationship off. She wasted years of her life on him, being at his side since their early teens and never letting go. Oh yes, this was definitely worth the embarrassment; she was more than ready to move on with someone else. “It’s closure.”

“There are other forms of closure, you know? Have you thought about writing him a letter?” Sher questioned. When she received a ‘whose side are you on’ look, she added, “Come on, this is my husband’s little sister, I have to at least attempt to persuade you not to do this. I would be unfaithful to the family if I didn’t.”

Gwen smirked; this wasn’t just Luis’ little sister, this was her current boyfriend’s baby sister as well. Oh yes, Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald had been more than a welcoming sight when he arrived back in Harmony. Tall, dark, handsome and a gentleman, he could have been Luis’ twin brother had he not been two years older. He was her own personal Adonis with one major difference: he was one hundred percent into getting even. In fact, he had a tough guy attitude and a heart of gold…and this was one thing she had to do. “I’m going in.”

“Gwen…”

“No! I have to do this, Sher. Besides, it was Antonio’s idea.”

“Yes, just the man to listen to, Gwen. That man is nothing but trouble with a capital T…”

Gwen shrugged and got out of the car. She liked trouble! In fact, she LOVED it. Taking a deep breath, she walked up to the front door and pushed it open. She had to do this if she wanted to move on…

And she wanted to move on!

He was sitting at the table
With someone new this time

Romantic Italian music filled the air and the scent of fresh picked roses surrounded her. The dimly lit romantic restaurant was one of their favorite places for their entire courtship. He had taken her here many times. In fact, one of the first times he mentioned marrying her was here. This was the place he first told her he loved her, the place where they had their first date.

Yet there they were, Ethan Winthrop and his fiancée Theresa, chatting happily about nothing at all as if their entire world couldn’t be more perfect. Theresa laughed at something Ethan said, her loud giggles surpassing the music, causing anger to flash in Gwen’s eyes. That little bitch had plotted for years to steal Ethan away and she had finally succeeded. The surprising thing was that Gwen no longer cared. Ethan had always been a loser and now she just proved it. That weakling could have his little Mexican dish if he so wanted, because she didn’t want him anymore.

She walked up right beside him
Her face did not turn red
She looked at him so calmly
And this is what she said

Proudly walking over to the table, Gwen continued to repeat the phrase, “You deserve better than him.” Really she did. In fact, she deserved MUCH better than Ethan. He was the most useless, idiotic man on earth. Before she knew it, she had arrived at his side with a calm demeanor and a smug smile. She was ready to blow him out of the water. “Hello, Ethan.”

“Gwen,” he jumped up, nearly spilling a glass of red wine on his beige pants. Lord what she would have paid to see that happen! “Wha…what are you doing here?” he asked dumbly.

She fought laughter. Oh yes, definitely a case of the lights being on and no one being home. “I thought I owed you a final goodbye. You know, let you know exactly what I think about you and this entire situation.”

“Gwen, don’t make a scene…”

“Oh, I won’t,” she promised looking at him and then Theresa. “Why don’t you sit back down, Ethan?”

He did.

She suddenly had the urge to pat him on the head and feed him a treat like the dog he was, but she forced it away. Looking at him, she leaned over slightly and said…

Good as I was to you
Is this the thanks I get
Are all the years we shared
So easy to forget

“For eleven years I gave you my heart and soul and spent every moment trying to make you happy. I was good to you, the best, and this is how you repay me? This is how you belittle our memories? By MARRYING the little teenage dreamer that stole you away?”

He tried to reply, but had no words to say.

“What about all the times we were together, Ethan? The times you told me that there was nothing going on between you and her? Was it lies? Were you deceiving me or yourself? Tell me, Ethan, what exactly did you plan to do? Marry me and have her?”

Does this mean that you've won
Are you finally having fun
Is she your dream come true
Oh she sure looks good but she won't ever be
Good as I was to you

She shook her head and took a deep breath. “Are you having fun, Ethan? Because this is what your getting for the rest of your life, a nineteen-year-old girl that doesn’t have a clue what it means to be an adult. Her own family will tell you she’s a dreamer that showed no hope of growing up. But that’s what you’ve chosen. Is she what you wanted? Did you want someone that would be so weak and submissive that she cries when something doesn’t even look like it will go her way?” She chuckled, mocking Theresa as she looked her over. “She looks good, Ethan. You picked a fine one to rob the cradle for…but she’ll never be me.”

The room got awfully quiet
Everybody stared
Finally the waiter said
Should I bring another chair
She said no I was just leaving

Everyone in the restaurant stopped their chatter and turned their attention on Gwen, who was still relatively calm. She hadn’t raised her voice, but she could still be heard above the music and clanging of dishes. The waiters all pointed and whispered, taking bets on when the cat fight would break out. Finally, one of them walked over to the table.

“Excuse me, Miss,” he interrupted politely, “but I was wondering if I should bring you a chair? Would you like to…”

She held up a hand. “No, thanks, I was just about to leave. I think I’ve said about all there is to say, don’t you Ethan?”

He nodded mutely.

Gwen chuckled. This was what she planned to spend the rest of her life with? Was she ever glad that she had the good sense to let go!

But as she walked out the door
She said honey you can have him
I don't want him anymore

She looked at Ethan and then Theresa, offering them another smug smile. Without another word, she turned on her heels and headed for the door, not even stopping to look back. She could feel the eyes of the other patrons following her, waiting for her to turn around and slap Theresa or lose her temper. That was until she reached the door. That’s when she remembered the one thing she had forgotten to say. Turning slightly, her eyes met Theresa’s and she added, rather loudly, “You know what, hun, you can have him. I don’t want him anymore.”

Good as I was to you
Is this the thanks I get
Are all the years we shared
So easy to forget
Is this the way it's done
Looking out for number one
Did you think it through
Oh she sure looks good but she won't ever be
Good as I was to you

“But I do have one question for you, Ethan. Did you think about what you were doing? I mean, she may look good now, but will you get tired of her too in three years? Maybe four? I hope you know, honey, he’s nothing special and I’m sure that he’ll change his mind about you too. You look good now, but you’ll never be what I was to him…” With a final wave, she was out the door and back to her car, prouder of herself than she had ever been in her life.

She climbed back into the car, thinking of her times with Ethan and not shedding a single tear. After all, what was there to cry about? She had tons of fond memories, but not one of them compared to the short time she had already spend with Antonio.

Sheridan placed her hand on Gwen’s arm again. “Are you ok?”

Gwen nodded. “All the years I spent with him, Sheridan, and he’s leaving me for her. What did I do to deserve this?”

Sheridan shrugged. “Some men are pigs.”

“Most…”

“All right, I’ll give you most,” Sheridan laughed. “But you’re ok?”

Gwen nodded. “You know, it felt good finally telling him what I think about him and his sorry excuse for a girlfriend. I wish him all the happiness we had…for as long as we had it.” And then she started the car and drove away from the restaurant, forgetting Ethan Winthrop and thinking about her new life ahead with Antonio.
