History: Scott Summers was the first of two sons born to Major Christopher Summers, a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Katherine. Major Summers was flying his family home from vacation aboard a vintage aircraft when a midair accident crippled the Summers' plane. Katherine pushed Scott and his brother, Alex, out the door with the only available parachute. With Christopher and Katherine presumed dead, the authorities separated the two boys: Alex was adopted, but Scott remained comatose in a hospital for a year. On recovering, he was placed in an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska. Years later, as a teenager, Scott began to suffer from severe headaches and eyestrain. He was sent to a specialist, who discovered that lenses made of ruby quartz corrected the problem.
While Scott was visiting a large city, his mutant power finally erupted -- bursting forth in an uncontrollable blast of optic force that demolished a crane, causing it to drop its payload toward a terrified crowd. Scott saved the onlookers' lives by obliterating the object with another blast. But the bystanders rallied into an angry mob, believing that he had tried to kill them. Scott fled, escaping on a freight train. The telepathic, telekinetic Professor Charles Xavier rescued the youngster from an abusive foster parent and enlisted him as the first member of the X-Men, a team of young mutants he planned to train to use their powers -- and in time, stand in defense of a world on the brink of genetic war.
As Cyclops, Scott became deputy leader of the X-Men. While he was a natural field general, his social skills were somewhat lacking. Scott had fallen in love with teammate Jean Grey, born with the powers of telepathy and telekinesis, but his reserved demeanor prevented him for years from expressing his feelings. When Xavier's other original recruits left the fold following an encounter with the sentient island-being Krakoa, Cyclops stayed on as deputy leader of the "new" X-Men. Shortly thereafter, the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force took Jean's place on the team. When the Phoenix Force committed suicide, Scott believed the love of his life had died. Grief-sticken, he left the X-Men. After returning to the team, Scott met and married Madelyne Pryor -- unaware she was a clone of Jean created by the master geneticist called Mr. Sinister. Scott and Madelyne had a baby boy, Nathan Christopher, and Cyclops again parted ways with the X-Men.
When the real Jean emerged from suspended animation, Scott left his wife and rejoined the original X-Men to establish a new team: X-Factor. Madelyne went insane, developed superhuman powers and perished in combat with Jean. After Cyclops and the founding members of X-Factor returned to the X-Men, the mutant warlord known as Apocalypse infected Nathan with a techno-organic virus. To save his son's life, Scott was forced to allow a time-traveling member of the Askani Clan to transport Nathan two millennia into the future, where it had been foreseen that he deliver would the world from annihilation at the hands of Apocalypse. Inevitably, Scott married Jean. While they were on their honeymoon, Mother Askani -- matriarch of the Askani Clan -- drew their spirits into the future. There, they inhabited new bodies; as Slym and Redd, the couple raised Nathan into early adolescence. When Scott and Jean returned to their own time and bodies, Nathan remained in the 30th century; he would mature into his time's greatest hero: Cable.
After the attack at the mansion, Cyclops was mortaly wounded. Both legs had been broken and even with surgery, Cyclops would have to walk with a cane. He decided that he was no longer worthy to lead the new X-Men and decided it was best for them to find an old X-Men and ask him to become their new headmaster.
