A

Astro A type of trunked radio system that is produced by Motorola Corporation that uses digital modulation, not monitorable on today's scanners

B

Birdies Interference caused by signals generated by the scanner's microprocessor and other internal electronics being recieved by the scanner.

C

Citizen's Band- A radio system where no licence is needed to transmit. Citizen's Band is divided into 40 channels where users can talk and hear each other in real time. Uses 26 + 27 MHz see cb.html

D

Discrimatator:a tap point inside a scanner or any radio that allows you to receive unfiltered, unamplified audio to be sent to a computer to decipher digital signals.

EDACS A type of trunked radio system produced by Ericsson Corportaton

Frequency Counter a device that measures the frequency of a near by transmitter.

HAM Radio A radio system where licenced operators talk to each other around the world.

Intermod Interference from a powerful, nearby transmitter causing noises to be heard on other frequencies

Repeater system Low power transcievers transmitting to a high power re-transmitter in order to extend the reach of their transmission.
Rubber Ducky Any short flexable rubber antenna usually come with portable handheld scanners.

Scanist A scanner user
Scan mode A mode where a scanner scans the user pre-set channels
Search mode A mode where a scanner finds active frequencies starting from a user set frequency and moving up or down down that frequency.
Spread Sprectrum The rapid changing of frequencies by a transciever to make it impossable to monitor on a scanner. Commonly used by some high end cordless phones.

Talk GroupsGroups of users of a Trunked Radio system
tone board A feature found is some high end scanners that will isolate one user or group of users on a conventional repeater system
Trunking system A group of frequencies between 850 and 865 MHz used by police forces and other businesses. As a conversation on a trunking system progresses the frequency used changes.
Trunk Tracker A type of scanner made by Uniden that keeps track of a transmission as the frequencies change.

UHF Ultra High Frequency- the frequencies ranging from 300-3000 MHz.

V

VHF Very High Frequency- the frequencies ranging from 30-300 MHz.

Whip Antenna A type of antenna that is segmented and can be extended to inprove reception.
