Come on over to the vegetable patch!
There's not much happening yet, but
things are getting started. We don't grow
peas and beans like most southerners--we
try our hand at things like
artichokes,brocilli, and cauliflower. We
grow our own herbs too.
This is our
herb garden just beginning to come up.
We've got basil,sage, thyme,oregano and
parsley.
Here we have mint.We
keep it in a pot so it wont run over the
whole garden.
We grow a lot of Garlic. It's easy to
grow, we use it a lot in cooking, and
it's good for you.
This plant
grew a stem that shot up over 4 feet. We
decided to let it go ahead and
flower.
Here it has
just opened up to display small purple
flowers.
Here are onions and shallots we just
pulled out of the ground.
We had brocolli and cauliflower growing
but it didn't do well-it got extremely
hot very early this year. We'll plant it
again toward fall and see if we do
better.
But we are
making pickles.
and canning
tomatoes.
We've got fruit trees and grape vines to
take care of too.We planted two peach
trees and a plum tree this year. Warm
weather often fools the trees into
blooming too early only to get hit with
a frost a few days later which means the
end for fruit. And of course we have
Pecan trees. They produce plenty of
pecans for family and friends and
provide shade to the yard in the
summer.
This old
apple tree seldom gets hit by the
frost.
It's loaded
with apples every year.
We have
several varities of grapes and a bullet
vine.
