Descending Order


StarHack's New Files
They've got some great new stuff - an MPQ extractor that works with Starcraft, BattleChat, a Win95 Battle.net chat client, an update for the Linux Battle.net chat client, and an improved Battle.net bot. Head over to their files section and grab them.

SC Multiplayer Map Pack
Smashed and Bucket have released a new Map Pack containing 10 different scenarios. Download the it here. (1.3 megs). News Source - PlanetSC

New Bug ?
S|U is reporting a new SC Terran bug. "Did you know that if you have max number of units (200) using Terrans, you cannot scanner sweep because the game will try to put down map revealers?" I haven't confirmed this bug, just passing the info on. Thanks Lanhdanan :)

Protect Against Disconnectors
Sta17 has a tip up on how to protect your record against the dreaded disconnectors. here's the tip :

One of the biggest problems on Battle.Net is disconnectors. Unfortunately, there's no way right now to get your deserved win, however you can prevent yourself from getting a disconnect on your record when the other guy disconnects on you. When you see that someone is disconnecting on you, press Alt-Tab and disconnect yourself from the internet. Basically, your disconnecting yourself also. When both players disconnect, the game becomes and draw and doesn't ruin your record (although the player who disconnected on you doesn't get a disconnect on their record either... - Pure-Funk

Multiplayer Ladder Games !!
Recieved this email, checked the site out, and thought i'd pass it along. If you like ladder play but miss the multiplayer atmosphere this could be for u. Sounds cool, check it out :)

Mad_Poets Scum Files
This page is just twisted enough for me to love ;) He only has 1 playable scum up right now, and is working on 2 more, but they look cool :) and a nice change of pace from the norm. Looks like he needs ppl to test these on b.net too, so give it a look.

Whats New at StarHack?
Well they're still up :) but no new legal news. They've got the Battle.net Experimentor done and is available for download in their files section. Go get it.

Quake Commercial Add On Now Shareware !!
Impel, developers of the Quake I expansion, Abyss of Pandemonium, have gotten into a dispute with their _ex_ publishers Instant Access. Result - Impel said "screw em" and has made the whole game shareware and is encouraging anyone who wants it to get it. Hey, u can't argue with that. War of the Worlds
Take a sneak peek at the new War of the Worlds game from Rage Software and GT Interactive. This game almost seems to be a period piece because it's meant to immerse u into HG Wells vision of the future. The good news is that it looks to be a unique game. The bad news is it's only single player (at least for now). Wells fans probably won't mind that tho. Release is scheduled for fall 98. Read the review here.

StarCraft Brood Wars Announced
Blizzard announced they will showcase Starcraft: Brood Wars, the official expansion set, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo May 28th. They'll also be showing Diablo II for the first time and previewing Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. Read the Gamesmania article here.

DioMorph v1.2
Dioxide over at S|I has released a new SCM, DioMorph v1.2. Dioxide describes it as "a four player multiplayer map which is similar to Laser Tag, but different. Stellar Forces Rip Off?
Saw at S|U that Leader1 didn't like Stellar Forces either. Here's what he had to say about it :

Listen and listen well, do not buy Stellar Forces for it is a RIP-OFF! Don't waste your $20, save it for the other expansion Insurrection. Anyway, the makers (Micro-Star) did a terrible job. There are no AI scripts in any of the levels. There aren't any large enemy bases. No new units, movies, characters, sounds, or music.

Middle Earth meets Cyber Space
Sierra On-Line and Yosemite Entertainment have acquired exclusive rights to computer games based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series. Foresaken Reviewed
Gamestats has a review of Foresaken up. They describe it as "Descent on steroids" and "Quake2 without gravity" with an overall rating of 9/10. Read the review here.

Best SC Strategy Guide On-Line !
And i'm not exagerating! Gamespot's Starcraft Strategy Guide by Redcrosse, aka Greg Kasavin has to be the most extensive and in depth strat guide yet. It covers single and multiplayer tactics for all the 3 races, as well as strat hints and tips for every unit, structure, mission, campaign, cheat codes, walkthrus, you name it it's covered. Blizzard's Keynote Speech
Paul Sams, VP of Blizzard, gave a speech at the CGDC. He said "the key to Blizzard's success has been our passion for games." No earth shattering news here but Sams did say that b.net has had 70,000 active SC users over the last 90 days. No wonder the servers are having problems... Read the article here.

The Future of Strategy Games
Several designers in the gaming industry got together for an hour long round table discussion on the future of strategy games. Things discussed included online multiplayer gaming, equal footing for new players, anti social behavior (hehehe) the importance of AI, expandability ie; importance of editors, and more. StarHack is reaching the deadline to make it's decision. I guess we'll know soon if this gets settled out of court or not. Quake II Backdoor Password
PCGamer has an article up that says hackers have found the backdoor password and have caused some servers to go down for apparantly no reason. read more here. Server operators can get a temporary fix here.

Diablo II News
I'm a little late in reporting this but Blizz released the final two chars for D2. A Sorceress and Barbarian. u can get all the info on them at the The Unofficial D2 Site or just click here for Sorceress and Barbarian.

Apple Announces iMac
Apple announced the iMac, they're new desktop system. Steve Jobs said that this will help get Macintosh back into competition. Read article here. Call me crazy but I think it's cute. [source - Lan's Billboard]

Getting the AI's to Fight Each Other and Invade Bases
Received an email from Igor and thought I'd pass it along, maybe it'll help some of u trying to do this. If u have comments or questions on this, please email him. Thanks for the info Igor :) Here's the email :

I haven't actually done this, but I have seen a bit of talk about it. People claim they have run AI script at location set player to enemy at opponents location to get the computer to fight against other computers when encountered, but they couldn't get the computer to invade other computer bases. The way to do this, I believe, is to run AI script at location value this area higher at opponents location This will make the computer send extra forces to the area. I just did a little scenario, and this did in fact seem to work. - igor

p.s. Observer Mode - I can also make maps with slots for non-combat, observing humans... once upon a time there was a lot of discussion about blizzard not including this, but it is a trivial matter.

Whats in the works at Blizzard Lately?
OGR has a good article on Blizz up. Lots of info in it, like Blizz is considering a patch for SC play imbalance, a little info on the SC expansion pack, Diablo II will NOT ship in 1998, and they're going to make a patch for WarCraft II and WC2 expansion patch. Read the article here.

Bugs are the Fav
Station 17 got a new layout today. They also posted the results of the favorite race poll. Guess what?? the Zerg won :) Ok ok it was only by 1% but it's still a surprise. I thought the terrans would take it in a landslide.
