This is my great-great-grandfather Samuel Haddock born November 16 or 17, 1840 or 41 in County Down, Ireland, somewhere in the Belfast area. He was the fifth of seven boys who came to America with their parents, John and Mary (Pritchard) Haddock on August 25, 1848. They came to Philadelphia aboard the Monongahela from Liverpool.
Sam enlisted in the Marines on June 3, 1861 and was sent to the Washington Barracks to wait for his ship to be comissioned when he got caught up in the battle of Bull Run. He then served aboard the USS Rhode Island and was aboard when that ship had the Monitor in tow and the Monitor sank in December of 1863. He finished out the war aboard the sailing ship Sabine. At least two of the other boys served in the Civil War, Charles in the Cavalry and Henry in the 23rd PA Vol. Infantry. Henry"s unit was at Gettysburg and Henry's name is on one of the brass plaques on the Pennsylvania Monument.
On March 17,1870 Sam married Jane Murphy the 3rd Murphy child who was born in Ireland 13 Feb, 1832 and died in Phila. 31 Dec, 1904 and was buried 4 Jan., 1905. Sam's civilian occupation was "loom boss" and Jane's was "weaver". They had three children, Jane (Jenny) Hill Haddock born 16 November 1871-died 21 November 1944 (single), Margaret (Maggie) Haddock born 16 February 1878- died 21 June 1962 (single), and Thomas John, my great grandfather, born 28 Sept, 1875 in Phila,. and died 28 Oct,. 1939 in Billingsport, NJ. Sam died on March 8,1917, at 2047 South 18th Street (18th & Snyder). I have been to that house many times to visit "Aunt Maggie" before she died in 1962. Below are pictures of Jenny(top left), Maggie and two of Thomas John, one as a boy in Philadelphia, PA (top center) and one as a man in front of his house in Billingsport, NJ.(bottom left) There is also a picture of the house at 18th & Snyder as it looked in the late 1990's.(bottom center) I've also added a picture of Sam & Jane's headstone in Mount Moriah cemetery.
I recently was able to gather some information on the Murphy family thanks to the help of Jamie Minner a fellow follower of the Friends of Mount Moriah site who solved a lot of mysteries for me. As you can gather the Murphy family (all mentioned here at least unless otherwise noted) are buried at Mount Moriah cemetery in Philadelphia, Pa.
Jane's parents were:
Joseph Murphy born in Ireland, died in Philadelphia in 1883.
Jane Hill Murphy born in Ireland and died in Phila. in 1875.
Jane's siblings were:
Fanny born in Ireland ca. 1837 married John L Wilson. Her husband died in 1885 and Fanny died Nov, 1910 and was buried Nov,23rd.
Margaret born ca. 1840 in Ireland. Margaret remained unmarried and died in Phila. in June 1922 and was buried on June 13th, 1922.
Mary born in Ireland 28 Dec, 1845, married Samuel Landen. They seem to have had 5 children but I have no names. Mary died on 2 Nov, 1922 and is buried in Arlington cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pa. along with her husband.
Joseph born (we think) in Phila. 21 Sept 1850 and died 12 Feb 1886 and was buried on the 16th.
Eliza born 1 May, 1855 married Thomas Craig. They had at least one child Jennie Hill Craig b. ca 1881 and died 5 Aug, 1883 and buried 8 Aug. Thomas died 30 May, 1920 and was buried 3 June. Eliza died 7 Feb, 1927 and was buried 10 Feb.
I must apologize for the appearance of this page. My coding is falling behind and I struggle placing objects let alone captioning them. We were told computing would get easier with time. I find that it has become anything but. There are things I could do with earlier versions of windows that I can no longer do. My html is recognized for the most part but outdated and some commands are no longer valid. Despite the mess the information is still here and that's what matters.
