Bieng raised in a strict Protestant family Thomas caused a rift that would never be mended when he married Mame who was Catholic. They were married in Chester, PA, 16 December 1901, by Richard W. Humphries, Minister of the Gospel. They had three children who survived. Thomas Francis (my grandfather),Anna Rosaria, and Howard Aloysius. The bad feeling was so strong that when Thomas Francis was christened Catholic his two aunts, Jenny and Maggie came to visit one day and on the ploy of taking baby Tom for a stroll actually took him to the local Episcopol church and had him baptized Protestant! The family was living on Green Street in Marcus Hook, PA at the time(a town I would get to know well in my Boilermaker years)and Thomas was working for the Pure Oil Refinery, as a clerk, having graduated Pierce Buisness School in Philadelphia. When he heard of the new Vacuum Oil Refinery in Paulsboro, NJ he took the Camden ferry and walked to Paulsboro to get a job there. He was the Head Storekeeper for years there and managed to get all his in-laws work there too.
He lived on Ferry Avenue with his family for years in a house that was once part of Lincoln Park a local attraction. At the end of his life he moved to a small place at 82 Riverview Avenue where he was cared for by his housekeeper Mrs Agnes Holland. Thomas died 28 October, 1939 of chronic inferstitual nephritis and pneumonia.
