Whale Music
by Anthony Minghella
This acutely sensitive play by the director of "The English Patient", is a moving, warm and funny portrayal of the lives of a group of women, all friends, who are bound by emotional ties. It is a well-observed
piece reflecting the attitudes and feelings of women towards each other, men and the world in general, albeit set in a different era - the late 1970s.
Caroline, pregnant by one of her boyfriends, escapes to her seaside birthplace, taking a room in
Stella's flat. Her old school friend Fran - now a happy mother but unhappy wife - lends her
clothes, advice and relaxing whale music records. Kate, with whom Caroline shared a house,
arrives with D, her young pupil and lover. The reaction of these women to each other and later
to the birth of Caroline's baby, shows the heights and depths of their collective emotions and
feelings in a sympathetic way.
