A Dance for Emilia

by Peter S. Beagle
Roc, 2000, hardback, $14.95, 87 p.

Jacob and Sam were best friends in high school. Jacob was going to be an actor and Sam was going to be the next Fred Astaire. They were good, but not stellar. Jacob went to the Coast to do Rep and dinner theater and Sam hired on with an arts magazine as their critic: music, opera, exhibits and theater, but not dance – never dance.

Over the years, they stayed in close touch. When Jacob got the phone call that Sam had passed away, Jacob couldn't accept it. Neither could Emilia, Sam's best girl. The power of their grief brings Sam back to do the one thing he couldn't do while he was alive: perform "a dance for Emilia."
