Minor NPCs (alphabetical)

Major NPCs

These are the "important people" that you'll have heard of in Qenar, Avrezin or elsewhere.

NOTE: I've added mage "rankings" to relevant NPCs. All levels are estimations based on their reputations; actual levels may vary. (But you'll never know, will you?)

Links to "portraits" are now available for some NPCs; all portraits are copyrighted by Yoon Ha Lee (1999 or 2000, depending). If you're curious about the media and my notes on the works, you can find them at the Pegasus Nest Art Gallery (plus other, non-Black Wall related works).

Qenar
Avrezin
Other

Qenar

The current marshal is Daziros Rahen, successor to Ris Komera. Rahen is known as a harsh man--patient, like his predecessor, but lacking Ris' fundamental kindness. He has an edgy sense of humor, often at the expense of "fools." He's also known for unswerving devotion to his homeland. Rahen rules Qenar from the Stronghold at Tenu.

The current high magistrate is Cat, successor to Aruja Ejien. Like all magistrates, Cat walks garbed in black, and carries a third dagger, his vaesjenar, in place of a sword; the vaesjenar is drawn only to kill. He also wears the spellsworn cross and is known as Qenar's most powerful mage. He's known as fair--too fair for his own good, they say...quietly, where he won't hear them. Cat makes his home at the Stronghold, Tenu, but is seen on circuit once a year in the fall.
It's well-known that Cat's specialties are dispelling and counterspelling, two of the most difficult and dangerous areas of magic, which explains how he took out 9 of Mirriyev's mages (see Current Events) and why other mages are relucant to test him). "Level 15."
I've rendered 3 portraits of Cat, The Day Dawned Red (as war draws nigh), Executioner (on which the former was based), and I Walk with Death (highly stylized...with different garb).

The current magistrate-heir is Darra Ejien. Unlike Cat, she remains in Tenu year-round, but has nearly equal status. She is also a teacher of those who would become magistrates.

The current commandant (read: canton ruler) of Tannaj is Brennen Jahorandir, an easy-going man with a Bereshi wife. While an able administrator, some aren't sure that Jahorandir would be as able a military commander.

The current commandant of Harava is Nuiven Jelwei, a desert-bred man with a stern sense of honor and little humor. His predecessor, Fiamonor Aharaz, was his opposite in temperament, but he respected her highly and will hear no ill spoken of her. Jelwei's current obsession is keeping the desert raiders from taking Harava. As commandant of the desert canton, Jelwei is independent of other concerns in Qenar; this has generally been the case in the past, but may prove fatal now.

The current commandant of Sjehan is Mazir Beros, a stubborn, short-tempered man determined to keep his canton secure at all costs. Recently he has spoken of stepping down in favor of a younger successor.

The current commandant of Birechan is Irezan Esse, the only woman among them all. (There *are* women at high military ranks. By some fall of chance they're few at this time.) She's known for a sharp tongue and sharper wit, and has been occupied both keeping Ezinen raiders from her borders and rebuilding from the Battles of Blackrock Pass (see Current Events).
Irezan is spellsworn, though hers are the minor magics, mostly healing and scrying. "Level 6."

The current commandant-errant and regent of Moruhan (Qenaren protectorate) is Vanen Miris. He's the youngest commandant and earned his post through extraordinary service during the Second Battle of Blackrock Pass. Rumors say that he's brilliant, but mad...lighter rumors connect him romantically with Irezan.
A picture of Vanen: Storm & Sea. Vanen's the one on the left, and his sleeve hangs funny because he's missing an arm. (Ever since I finished that picture I've been haunted by his accusing eyes.) The other is Kitseya.
Another portrait, showing Vanen in armor: Birechan the Unbroken.

Kitseya Ryuhan is a Summersea islander and, some whisper, a former assassin. She left the Summersea for a reason no one's sure of: some suspect exile, while others think she tired of the clans' intrigues...or perhaps both. She served briefly as Warlord Piromel's bodyguard (or hired thug, depending on idioms) before surfacing again in Qenar, this time as a partner to Cat during the Second Battle of Blackrock Pass. She has wandered in and around Qenar since then, with no official position, though as someone with Cat's ear she has earned a healthy respect...not to mention her well-known skills with blade and spell. It is not known whether she has taken the spellsworn's oath.
Those who have heard of her are aware that she uses foreign magic shaped by origami. It is rumored that her magical specialties are subterfuge and disguise rather than outright killing.
A picture of Kitseya: Storm & Sea. Kitseya's the one on the right; the origami crane and live crane are her doing.

Avrezin

Raesja Piromel is the warlord of Avrezin, ruling from Rekke by the River. She succeeded Warlord Kelas Tavaien, her mentor, upon his death at the Battle of Blackrock Pass, and ever since has been known as the most unwarlike warlord in recent years. Not to say that she lacks a ruthless streak; she lost half her face at Blackrock, and wears a veil in public--and those who meet her one eye know she isn't one to cross. There are those who dislike her rule and her disregard for the old ways.
Raesja is known for fire-spells and other combat spells, both offensive and defensive. It's a toss-up as to whether she or Cat would win a magical duel, and these two dominate the magical scene. "Level 15."
Here's Raesja in From the Fire. I cheated and didn't try to depict the ruined half of her face. She's shown with the Firebird and Rekke's banner, the Firebird's Talon. (Her name appears as Iromel due to Origami Souls, where I dropped the "p" phoneme from the language.)

Liriyen Lassa is the regent of Zel the Golden. (NOTE: "regent" means roughly "one who rules with the warlord's consent.") She's a gentle, grey-haired woman who abhors anything more violent than the occasional brawls and riots that rock her port city, and a patron of the arts. Also astaunch supporter of the warlord.

Eren Vranos is the regent of barren Kisria, a religious man who stood against the warlord in the past, and yet remains her friend. Vranos has been quiet of late...and rumors say this friendship might not last long.

Vanen Miris: see Qenar, above. Technically not Ezinen.

Deraq Korua is the mage-regent of Teres, one of the Sister Cities. She is an expert at politics and concerned with securing the best advantage for the Sisters, who control the river delta that provides most of Avrezin's rice.
They tell ominous tales of the people she twists with her magic, but no one has ever found proof. In her region she's the most feared mage: Cat is spellsworn, after all, and Raesja has a sense of ethics and restraint. It is whispered that her spells involve mind control, persuasion, and glamours. "Level 8."

Cheros Gasei is the only regent with an islander last name, inherited from a Summersea grandmother. A suave, purring man who lost his wife to an assassination; only the most morbid balladeers sing of the assassin's fate. He rules Veres, the other of the Sister Cities.

Other

Other influences move in the world, but they haven't yet made themselves known.

If you're from a country other than these and need to know who the local bigwigs are, make 'em up and clear it through me, or ask.

Minor NPCs

Note: If you're a player browsing this, be prepared to firewall.

These people aren't necessarily unimportant, but they're less prominent politically or otherwise; rumors and news about them, if any, are likely to be strictly local.

Aris
A Qenaren officer stationed at the Stronghold, Tenu.

Avro
A monk in the lore of Silver River Shrine. He used his (psionic) powers to kill his sister, went mad, and committed suicide.

Cons Arigsarkisson
A lord from the West, whose family's rise and fall is immortalized in a song.

Daverris
Sorevvan captain in service to the Magistra Liessira.

Emif
One of Harava's rascals, knowledgable about camels and vulnerable to a pretty lady's charms.

The Ghostwolf
Historically, Qenar's first (recorded) marshal. Also responsible for the bargain between Qenaren and wraiths: the wraiths enforce Qenar's law in exchange for a home where they will not be hunted.

Haddan
An elderly monk at Silver River Shrine, one of So Fooyan's teachers. Whether he's alive or dead is unknown.

Halar
One of Harava's many beggars. An old woman and Yasmaili's friend.

Jamir Chahraz
Qenaren captain at Harava. Responsible for overseeing spellsworn activities, especially in the area of intelligence. He is spellsworn himself.

Liessira
Sorevvan magistra stationed at an outpost near Alanha. Is willing to take whatever measures are necessary to secure Sorevv's future...and reunite Avrezin's interests with Sorevv's. Also a mage.

Lirixa
A mage who showed up in Birechan, certainly a foreigner and probably a Westerner. Her purpose in travelling to Qenar is unknown.

Lynx
A mage-engineer at Tenu whose father was Ezinen. Trained by Cat, but unfortunately, he's also a klutz.

Maqis
A Qenaren soldier stationed at Fort Blackrock.

Mehuna
A Haravai belly-dancer who likes to gossip and is enamored of a jeweller's handsome son. One of Yasmaili's friends. She has a younger sister, Meliz.

Meliz
Mehuna's younger sister. A lame shawm-player who lives in Harava.
Otter
Qenaren soldier stationed at Fort Blackrock. Unlike most Qenaren, he can swim. One of Shakra's acquaintances

The Red Hawk
A mysterious figure that has appeared in Avrezin, who seems bent on Qenar's conquest. True identity unknown.

Vrini
A monk in the lore of Silver River Shrine who was killed by a wraith for an unknown crime.

Wrathblood
Cat's horse (as "named" by Frenil), currently on loan to Frenil Bentyr. A battle-trained Haravai steed who likes to use her teeth.

Yasefe
Yasmaili's brother, who considered her an asset (and was disabused of this notion when she ran away). Aligned, at least nominally, with Clan Mahourza of the Diresands. A dangerously ambitious man.

Zerre
Qenaren commander stationed at the border between Avrezin and Qenar. Usually Marika's commanding officer.
