nfortunately, there it is again: "No, but if you have, we'll be just fine." He puts down his chopsticks and leans back, having finished all his food. For a moment his mouth is a line of past hurt, but then it disappears into the bumbling good cheer she first saw from him. "I have the accent down, too, if it helps." To her surprise, he does.

"It helps," she admits grudgingly. "But it's more than just an accent." It's in the back of her mind to demand that he just stay quiet and follow her, but then again, she doubts any of the Ezinen will believe him intelligent enough to be a spy should he open his mouth. She supposes she'll just have to let him stumble his way through and pull him out of any holes he falls into without letting him forget it.

"I'll figure it out," he says.

She looks at him skeptically, then shrugs. As long as he doesn't drag her through the trouble he makes, she's fine.

He eyes her, then adds, "I suppose there's no point in keeping secrets from you, though I suppose we might get captured and tortured or something." Lynx treats this possibility the way he would treat, she presumes, invited to a dinner. "I've had some training in engineering. If they pull anything like that cannon on us again, I'll know what it is."

[Reminder: One of the reasons it initially seemed that Regents Mirriyev and Vranos would succeed in the 2nd attack on Qenar was that they brought cannon, which for the first time supplanted trebuchets, ballistae and catapults as siege/war engines.]

"Right before you set it off on us," she mutters, but she is impressed--by herself, that is. She was actually right. She mentally pats herself on the back for the sharp guesswork. Of course, there's a downside to being correct. Engineers, in her experience, think everything out well enough in theory, but have trouble with the real world. Or they get caught up in how insignificant things work. She sighs at the thought of training him to the point where he won't endanger her, let alone be of use.

"Well, I'd rather have them dealing with a spiked cannon than leave it in their hands," says Lynx. "For the cause, and all that."

Which just confirms her impression of engineers. A bit cautiously, she says, "If there were a way to keep it out of their hands *and* escape unscathed ourselves, you *would* take it, right?"

Lynx scratches his head, thinks about it, then says, "I suppose that makes sense." Then he beams at Marika.

"Any other 'secrets' to spill?" she asks. "Since qev'yan is done..." She hopes he'll take the hint.
