T

he woman lowers her voice--and, over the veil, Yasmaili catches a wink. One gloved hand draws a sealed letter out from beneath her robes and finery, presses it into Yasmaili's hand. "I would have this message taken to Gard Aharaz, for Captain Jamir Chahraz." She smiles coyly and one of the onlookers, a caravaneer already deep in his cups, nods wisely to himself and turns his attention to the game of darts in the corner.

Gard Aharaz! Connections indeed, as a spellsworn. Once the brick-and-sandstone fortress was home to Clan Aharaz, the rulers of Harava; now it is home to the commandant, his staff and soldiers, both with and without desert blood.

Yasmaili feels a tingling at the back of her mind as all coyness drops away from the woman's voice. "The sign is: 'The sun sets quickly over the horizon,' and the countersign: 'The night is even swifter.' This only makes sense, of course, from the Gard's west gate." Her eyes as she studies Yasmaili are amused, but friendly. "I saw you watching the gentleman yonder; I have reasons of my own for keeping watch on him, and Chahraz would be most interested in yours."

Then the tingling fades, and after a pause for questions, the lady sweeps away, glittering like a bird from the southern jungles.

Tucking the letter away out of sight beneath the drab layers of her outer robe, Yasmaili stays where she is only for long enough that it will not be obvious that she is leaving on the lady's heels. Then she carefully shuffles away. Once she has left the area behind, she straightens and heads towards Gard Aharaz at a faster pace, wondering the best way to assure her anonymity once she arrives.

She can think of no way to achieve that end. For a brief moment she ponders the wisdom of going in her own persona. If Yasefe knew she had connections with the commandant...but she is just delivering a message. No, her old woman personna is probably best and safest for now.

Crouching back down she resumes her geriatric shuffle, and slowly approaches the west gate, rehearsing the sign and counter-sign to herself.
