Character Description

Yasmaili has almond-shaped eyes of golden-brown, and tawny skin. When loose her hair falls straight and black to her waist, but she usually wears it piled on top of her head and held in place with long wooden skewers. Her figure is well-rounded, with a narrow waist. When she is not dancing she tends to wear loose fitting caftans and billowing trousers. Her dancing outfit consists of a tight black vest worked with bright beads, and a multi-colored skirt. Her belt is made of many loops of chain, with tinkling gold coins suspended from them, and on her black veil a fiery bird is embroidered in metallic threads.

Character History

Yasmaili ran away from her upper-class family to escape the political machinations of her oldest brother (i.e. an unwanted marriage). She had an older sister who died in childbirth, and so she is wary of romantic attachments, etc. She now makes her living as a street performer, and though she takes pride in her dancing skill she has a burning desire to improve her magical abilities and become a "real" mage.

Now that she has finished stretching, Yasmaili carefully fits on her zills making sure the straps are adequately tight over the joins of her thumbs and middle fingers. Then she takes a deep breath, and concentrating hard summons the scattering of gold and blue pin-point mage-lights that are her trademark. Sending them flitting about like fireflies, she begins the ringing rhythm that will drive her nights preformance. The mage-lights obediantly start bobbing and swirling in time. Seeing them, bright against the darkening sky, a number of people drift over to watch, and before they can become bored and melt away, Yasmaili shifts her stance slightly, spreading her hands up and out, commanding their attention. Now for the real preformance.

She jerks one hip upwards sending the coins on her belt into a tinkling counterpoint to the zills insistant rhythm. The opposing hip makes a similar jump. After an endless pause she bursts into action, her belt chains clattering and leaping as she works the fast beat with snappy hip moves and quick intricate steps across the arc of gathering watchers and back again. Then she swirls backwards, her skirt flairing up and around, and she calls the magelights in to swarm about her as spins about rippling her stomach muscles. Waving graceful circles and arcs about her with her arms as she turns, she sends the lights trailing after them, like an invisible veil set with gold diamonds and bright saphires. A glance at her audience shows that she has caught their attention. Good. With a final twirl and uplifted arms, she freezes. The mage lights funnel up toward the sky and then spread out like stars, circling slowly above her.

For two breaths she stands as still as a statue, and then the zills once again begin beating their rhythm, this time at a much slower pace. Her hips begin an almost imperceptable quiver. It sets her belt vibrating, and gradually moves up across her belly until her shoulders begin vibrating as well, and then slowly, oh so slowly she begins to lean backwards. Although this is the beginning of the most difficult part of her preformance it is also the first chance she has to get a really good look at who is watching. Her eyes light hopefully on a set of two elaborately dressed young couples. Men don't like to appear stingy when courting. As she continues to arch her back, she begins looking at the upside down half of her audience. There, in bright silks, a merchant! They rarely *threw* coins, but she had learned that a little personal attention often resulted in a gold coin being pressed to her forehead.

Looking at people upside down is a trifle disorienting. She doesn't recognize the slender man standing next to the merchant until she is most of the way down, and then the shock nearly makes her loose her balance. She manages not to fall on her head, but the steady shimmying vibrations stop abruptly as her muscles freeze, and the almost instinctive ringing of the zills is stilled. "Ash and Shadows!" she thinks. "What's *he* doing here?"
