Hestia was the eldest of the six divine children of Cronus and
Rhea and goddess of the hearth. Hestia was very different from her five
sisters and broters, not getting involved in any of the conspiracies that
simmered on Mount Olympus and always shunning the battle field, always
striving to act as peacemaker among gods and men; she was a gentle and
benevolent goddess. She was queen of the homestead, patroness of mariage,
insitgator of domestic joys and protector of all lost and orphaned children,
though she never took a husband or bore any children herself. Hestia was
worshipped with a multitude of small fires and in her honor, a hearth was
never allowed to grow cold.
