”…I might have gone mad, but for a small collection of books, my father left me. In their pages, at least, I was freed from the prison and in my solitude; I grew to love their characters. As I loved those nearest and dearest to me.” – “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens
And so it is for many of us. Said by one of the long gone masters of literature, who have inspired a world populated by books turned into films. In today’s society, the storytellers who once would have put words to paper to tell their tales, now put images to film and let us see them. And a few, to live it, albeit vicariously through the characters on screen. And thus those characters become friends and family to the mind’s eye.
We love when they love, we feel pain when they feel pain, and we feel the loss when one of our beloved leaves us, on screen or no. Some of us more than others, but it’s there all the same. The on-screen imagery lends itself all the more to pulling us into their world, making them real and whole. Sending us through a range of emotions from love to hate and pain to laughter. Few stories read from the pages of a book or told on stage and screen can leave such an impression.
“Highlander: The Series”: is one of those great stories. Told from the heart of others and immortalized forever on film, to be told again and again. “Highlander” touches those who invite it’s beloved, if a bit precarious at times, characters into their lives, even if only for a short while. For those that followed the series in it’s original run, beginning to end, they were family. Watchers found a brother, a lover, a sister, a father, a mother or a friend in the characters portrayed by the cast.
When Darius, Tessa, Fitz, Richie, Connor and many others left us, we mourned, but we could still relive the good times, by watching the series in syndication. When a moment touched us we could go back and experience it again and again. Alas for a long time this was not true. It was few and far between to find a TV station that showed “Highlander”. USA Networks and The Sci-Fi Channel aired it for a short time, but even they let it fade away. Today Spike TV has picked up the series and it lives again. The release of three seasons of the show on DVD has made viewing the series a dream come true, with the other three seasons still to come.
Many fans of the show or perhaps I should say CLAN, for fans seems too tame a word for a group of people who defend Richie’s antics (He’s just bein’ Richie!), Duncan’s dark moods (You’d be bitter too if you were 411 years old!) and Amanda’s bad habits (She’s a good person really!), to friends and family here in the real world, all the while trying to explain how they are “like family”. Many of those Clan members have expressed their wish that “Highlander” remain on the air in syndication, for the production of the forthcoming film “Highlander: The Source, and for the highly anticipated DVD season releases.” Well, here’s your chance to give it all you’ve got. Join us!
Project:Highlander:Resurrection is an unprecedented campaign to keep “Highlander” on the air, promote the new movie “Highlander: The Source” and the season DVD releases for us all. Join the fight and become part of the Immortal Highlander Clan. Learn how you can help us keep “Highlander” in the spotlight! After all, immortals do live forever…let’s make the rest of the world see that!
