Hello everyone, Just a quick update before we go on the road again. There is a new Poll up, so please vote when you have time. There's a new image on "Who's Peter Crockett", and the "Linux News" page has been updated. The site traffic has been awesome this week, with over 2000 hits and I've answered over 130 emails since Saturday! I've had a problem with Frontpage98 and it turns out that it has to do with the size of the packets being sent out. Thanks to Andy (and yes, I typo'd his email address last time) awendt@putergeek.com I'm up and running again! Even a "geek" needs a geek to turn to from time to time.
Here's the good stuff...

Just For Grins
Reader Bill Grigg sends along this gem. (If anyone knows the original author, please let me know.)
Top 12 things likely to be overheard if you had a Klingon Programmer:
12) "Specifications are for the weak and timid!"
11) "This machine is a piece of GAGH! I need dual Pentium processors if I am to do battle with this code!"
10) "You cannot really appreciate Dilbert unless you've read it in the original Klingon."
9) "Indentation?! - I will show you how to indent when I indent your skull!"

7) "Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' - they have 'arguments' - and they ALWAYS WIN THEM."
6) "Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak."
5) "I have challenged the entire quality assurance team to a Bat-Leth contest. They will not concern us again."
4) "A TRUE Klingon Warrior does not comment his code!"
3) "By filing this bug report you have challenged the honor of my family. PREPARE TO DIE!"
2) "You question the worthiness of my code? I should kill you where you stand!"
1) "Our users will know fear and cower before our software! Ship it! Ship it and let them flee like the dogs they are!"

(some news) (Is this fast enough for you?)
(1) AMD to raise speed bar with 700-MHz Athlon
Speeds will increase for PCs next week when Advanced Micro Devices releases a 700-MHz version of its Athlon chip, a move that will be followed by new computers from IBM and Compaq Computer. The new chip, expected to be announced Monday, will mean that AMD will continue to enjoy a speed and performance advantage over Intel's top chips, according to analysts and other sources. Intel won't be far behind, however; it is slated to come out with 700-MHz and 733-MHz Pentium IIIs on October 25, sources said. The fastest Pentium III now tops out at 600 MHz. Overall, Athlon achieves a higher level of performance than the Pentium III at equal speeds, leading to crisper, more realistic graphics, according to testers.

PC industry hit by Taiwan quake aftershocks
The impact of last week's earthquake in Taiwan will take a while to sink in, so look for problems in the PC market later rather then sooner. Some of the most ominous indicators of a tight market to come are a steep rise in memory prices over the past week, a hike in graphics chip costs, and a lack of core support components for processors. The result could be higher PC prices, a shakeup of the "free" PC market, delays of some PC models, and depressed earnings. Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carleton "Carly" Fiorina said Friday that fourth- quarter growth will take a hit because of the earthquake. We are sure of some disruption and delay in some elements of our PC supply chain," she said Friday. Also, BancBoston Robertson Stephens downgraded Dell stock Friday because of, among other reasons, the recent supply issues caused by the Taiwan earthquake, according to electronics analyst Daniel Niles. Meanwhile, component suppliers are raising prices.
