Hello everybody,
I hope you all had a good year!  I'm finally starting to get
caught up on the website.  There's a new help form that
should make solving problems a bit easier.  And I plan to
make some new pages this week as well.  Some of the info
below is a little old so please bear with me since some
folks won't have seen this yet.  Here we go...

>From Windows-Help.net

Obscure bug found in new Pentium III processors
http://www.windows-help.net

Intel said that a recently discovered bug in the new Pentium
III "Coppermine" processor will be eliminated soon, when the
company moves to the next "stepping" version of the
processor. Intel is also testing processors to weed out
chips containing the flaw.

The flaw (called "erratum" in geek-speek) becomes apparent
in the "boot-up" sequence. It essentially forces computer
owners to hit the "on" button twice, according to an Intel
spokesman. If a computer contains a chip with the flaw, it
does not start until the second try.

According to an Intel spokesman the bug only affects 1 to 2
percent of Pentium III "Coppermine" processors and has only
been observed in labs.

In the past week the first Y2K related viruses started to
appear. These viruses are Y2K related because they disguise
themselves as a Y2K fix, or they trigger events when the
computer is first booted after the January 1 2000 date, thus
giving users the impression that whatever happens is the
result of the so called Y2K bug, instead of a virus.

Experts think that the number of viruses to be released
before the end of this year will reach between 500 - 1000.

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself. To
begin with, stop opening files attached to emails, even
(because of the Melissa-like viruses) when that email comes
from someone you know!

Make it clear to your friends, and if you really need to
share documents or other files, send an advanced notice from
what you are going to send them next.

To help you combat the onslaught of viruses, Microsoft and
leading anti-virus firms are providing free 90-day trial
versions of anti-virus software to consumers preparing for
the year 2000. The software can be found on Microsoft's Year
2000 Web site through December 31.

The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer

If you didn't do so already, maybe you have some time during
the last days of the year to check on your Microsoft
applications

The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer scans a computer's
hard drive, looking for core Microsoft software and
generates a report with year 2000-information.

The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer performs the
following tasks:

Identifies installed software products on specified drives
by scanning the drives for executable files
Compares the resulting list of products to the products
listed in a compliance database
Generates a report of the compliance levels of the products
it discovered, based on the information in the compliance
database

:

Emails like these are almost always hoaxes. ALWAYS verify any supposed virus report before you sound the alarm. It only takes a minute using any of the FREE links below. Otherwise, by sending out an unverified---and probably false---virus warning,
you're unwittingly aiding and abetting the hoaxers, which is
exactly what they want.

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ will tell you whether this or any virus threat is real or a hoax. (Almost all the major antivirus vendors offer similar free services; you don't have to own their software to look up whether a a virus is real or not.)

http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html will bring you to the Department of Energy's "Computer Incident Advisory Capability," a site used by government workers to see if virus reports are real or not.

http://www.kumite.com/myths/ has information on hundreds of email hoaxes

http://urbanlegends.about.com/culture/urbanlegends/index.htm
also lets you look up many hoaxes by name or type.

And http://www.snopes.com/spoons/faxlore/ also will help you identify hoaxes.

Again, please NEVER forward a supposed virus warning
(or any other kind of email) just because you get an email that says
"Pass this on to everyone!" This kind of email is almost always a
chain-letter hoax. Verify first, then tell your friends only if it's true.

Agent 631 is on the move again. This time, he's infiltrated
your system and he's watching your every move. Do you know
where Internet Explorer goes when you're away for the day?
It's easy for users to erase their tracks (by deleting the
history, clearing the cache, turning off AutoComplete,
etc.), so hire the spIE to spy. It'll remain completely
invisible and log every Web site visited. Your friends and
family will think twice before double clicking.
