Back to Photo Diary

Here will be displayed a few photos taken by either myself or Ebony of local history, mostly ships I'll admit.

HMS Warrior, docked in Portsmouth Harbour

A canon on the upper deck of the HMS Victory. Trust Ebony to take a picture of a weapon!

This plaque was on the floor of the upper deck to mark the spot where Nelson fell. It was a long standing joke that he tripped over the plaque. (It kinda loses its humour when you know that the plaque used to be on a raised piece of wood, guess they put it flat to the floor because people kept falling where he fell!)

The HMS Victory, or as much as we could fit into the shot

Another shot of the HMS Warrior, taken after seeing Ebony off. I wanted to use the film up to have it developed that day so took pictures of things we saw a lot. Note the grey clouds, they reflect just how I felt that day

In the middle of this shot is a passenger ferry designed to take commuters between Gosport and Portsmouth without having to go all the way round the motorway. It's the green and white boat in the centre, and we often used the ferry just so we could go to the interesting shops and to get to the cinema to see Terminator 3

In the centre of this shot, though it's barely visible, is a police boat. The funny thing is I'd never seen it out there before. It appeared there the day Ebony arrived and departed the day she left. Coincidence? You decide. Also to the side of the shot is the close up of the stern of the ferry, which was dubbed the Enterprise for some reason. Probably because of the twin funnels. (The boat itself is actually called Pride of Gosport or something like that, so Enterprise is just a nickname)

Another shot of the HMS Warrior from halfway across the harbour on the ferry. I was on my way back home after seeing Ebony off, so I was still quite upset at this point.

You can just about make out the naval ships docked in the centre of the shot here. They'd arrived only a few weeks before to an array of air escorts including something that was either an American Tom Cat or British Tornado (I'm only going by what my dad told me here!)

This is a better shot of the navy ships, sort of.  Also in the shot is the tide clock which gives us an idea of when the next high tide will be (that triangular thing to the left of the shot)

Yet another shot of the 'Enterprise' along with a nice view of the incomplete Spinniker Tower. That tall thing was supposed to have been finished in time for the new millenium. They started building it this year! Oh well, better late than never!
There are pages out there detailing the progress of the construction and also have artists impressions of what it'll look like upon completion. It's already the tallest thing round here and it's nowhere near finished!

This photo just about captures the navy ships (left), the masts of the HMS Victory (centre) and the HMS Warrio (far right), as well as an old flat thing seagulls like to sit on!

Just a bit of local history. An Admiral of the Fleet who lived round here or something. This is where I embarrass myself because I don't even remember the name that was inscribed on the plaque, let alone why there's a bust of him!

Well, there you go. That's all my photos of my week with Ebony.
