New Head Coach For Tehachapi
For the first time in 35 years, the Tehachapi High football program will have a new head coach on the sidelines. First year, first time varsity coach Doug DeGeer will be replacing Hall of Fame coach Steve Denman who is riding off into the sunset along with his long-time assistant coaches Bill Carll, Dennis Ruggles, and Pat Snyder.
What DeGeer will face in his first season might be the toughest pre-season schedule in school history --- and a fourth straight season in the highly competitive South Yosemite League which features games against an all-Bakersfield lineup.
Last year the 2016 Warriors finished 1-4 in the pre-league schedule but turned things around in league play, finishing 4-1, to capture a share of the SYL crown.
The Warriors will play a 10 game schedule with 5 home games and 5 away games; with no "bye" week on the schedule this season.
The first five games of the season are pre-league games. The 2017 Warriors face the same lineup as last season, except a number of those teams are more talented than last year.
The season opener will be Friday night, September 1, on the mountain, as the Warriors play the Burroughs Burros from Ridgecrest. The Warriors lost to Burros,14-22,
in a highly competitive game in 2016. The Warriors lead the all-time series 15-10.
Week 2 features a game against Garces at Coy Burnett Field on September 8. The rivalry game, known as the "Ogilvie Bowl", will be the 46th meeting between the two schools. Garces defeated the Warriors 42-7 in Bakersfield in 2016. Garces leads the overall series 24-19-2.
Week 3 brings an old South Sequoia League foe as the Warriors play at home for the 3rd straight week against Bakersfield Christian on September 15.
The Warriors lead the overall series 5-2, but lost to BCHS, 14-7, in 2016. BCHS finished 13-2 in 2016, winning the a DIII CIF section championship.
The Warriors first road game is September 22 against powerhouse Paraclete in Lancaster. Paraclete whipped the Warriors 35-7 in 2016 and the Spirits went on to win a CIF State Championship. Tehachapi leads the overall series 17-7.
The final Week 5 tune-up game before league play will be on the road against North Bakersfield on September 29. The Warriors defeated
the Stars 28-6 last season, and lead the overall series 9-1.
League play will begin October 6 at Independence-Bakersfield. Both Ridgeview and Independence figure to be the league favorites again this season. The league schedule includes a game at East Bakersfield on Oct. 13; a home game vs. Golden Valley on Oct. 20; a home game against Ridgeview on Oct. 27; and a game at West Bakersfield on Nov. 3.
