Announces 2009 Football Schedule
The Tehachapi High School Athletic Department recently released the 2009 Warrior football schedule. The schedule features a 10 game format, with five pre-season games and five South Sequoia League games.
The dean of Kern County coaches, Steve Denman, will return for his 28th season as the head coach of the Warrior program. Denman has amassed a career 233-91-4 coaching record enroute to 11 league championships, 6 CIF runner-up finishes, and 6 CIF championships.
The season opener will find the Warriors making a long trip to Santa Ana in the "return game" with Segestrom. The Warriors defeated the Jaguars in the 2008 season opener on the mountain in the inaugural meeting between the two schools.
In Week 2, the Warriors will travel to Bakersfield to meet the rival Garces Rams in the annual Ogilvie Bowl. The series is tied 17-17-2 in competition that dates back to 1946.
Tehachapi will open up at home on September 18 against Frontier High School. The Titans defeated the Warriors 19-18 in Bakersfield in 2008 in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
In Week 4, the Warriors will again be home against Burroughs. The Ridgecrest school defeated the Warriors on a last minute kickoff return in 2008. Tehachapi leads the overall series 9 to 8.
After a "bye" week, the Warriors return to action in their final pre-league tuneup against Rosamond. The Runners' will make the short 20 minute bus trip to Tehachapi in Week 5, looking for some revenge after dropping a lopsided game to the Warriors in 2008. The Warriors lead the series 26-5 in games dating back to 1965.
The Warriors open up league play on October 16 playing host to the defending SSL and CIF champion Bakersfield Chistian Golden Eagles. The Eagles, behind QB sensation Derek Carr, defeated Tehachapi 40-35 in 2008.
The Warriors round out SSL play on October 23 at Arvin; October 30 at Shafter; November 6 at Wasco; and on November 13 at home against Taft.
While claiming back-to-back CIF titles, the Warriors have won the SSL once in the past five years --- in 2007. The Warriors have won six SSL titles since joining the league in 1992.
