How they used the water
Native Americans camped in this area because of the healing nature of Medical Lake. They built huts along the shore where they could put people over a steaming pot of lake water for medicinal purposes. After the water boiled down in large pots the Indians scraped the sides and took the crystals back to their villages and/or traveled with them to use for healing procedures. The Granite Quarry This granite rock pile is the remains of a late 1800’s and early 1900’s granite quarry. The granite was formed into blocks and used for the foundations in many of the Medical Lake buildings and homes. The granite quarry is now mostly submerged under water, however at the turn of the century (1900) the high water line was much further out and workers could move freely around the pile. The great blue heron often perches on the granite pile as this great bird does it part to reclaim this site for nature. |
