The Second Day

Genesis 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

God then created the atmosphere with water above and below it.

Firmament means air or atmosphere.
The word midst is used for the Hebrew word ta-vek, which means to divide, to stand between the two.

Genesis 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

Basically this verse clarifies the verse preceding it.
This layer of super cold water would have been suspended high above the atmosphere because it’s low temperature would have cause it to be magnetic.

Genesis 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

This is the "first heaven" where bird fly. Gen 1:20 "...fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven."

The "second heaven" is where the celestral bodies are. Deu 4:39"...the stars of heaven..."

The "third heaven" is beyond the bounds of space, it is where God is. Deu 4:39 "...that the LORD he is God in heaven above..."
