From the Rocket
Young Fresh Fellows
The Young Fresh Fellows hit the cover of The Rocket twice, and the second time was just two years after their first appearance. The first piece, written by Charles R. Cross, highlighted their initial impact. By the time of Jeff Pike's story in 1986 they were one of the Northwest's favorites. The band toured the U.S. several times, made it to Spain, and became the darlings of college radio. All the various Fellows have gone on to other acclaim: Scott McCaughey as a solo artist, occasional Rocket scribe, member of Tuatara, Minus 5 and R.E.M., owner of Malt Records, former booker at the Crocodile Cafe, and all-around sunglasses-wearing guy. Jim Sangster plays with the Picketts and the Congratulators and produces records. Kurt Bloch is also in the Fastbacks and is a renowned producer. And Tad Hutchinson is an in-demand illustrator when he's not in the Chris and Tad Show.
Since our last cover story the Fellows have released another 10 albums. This year they reunited for a three-night stand at the Crocodile playing every song they knew, and a few they didn't. The Fellows are presently working on a new album, slated for release in spring of 2000.
