Miscellaneous Hologram Devices
These are the basic holographic devices that are used all over the galaxy. They are very rare and difficult to come by. For that reason, you realize, they are going to be very expensive. Especially the bigger ones.
You glance over at Daar and ask about the images produced by the various models. He informs you that they're for show only, and don't come with the projector. You grin, glad that you wouldn't have to look at Imperial Leader, Darth Vader.
When a hologram recording is made, the recorder scans the subject via two synchronized images, while the units internal computer combines those recordings to construct a three-dimensional light image, that is complete with color, sound, and motion. These holograms then can be stored on crystals, data tapes, or data disks for later playback.
The miniaturized hologram projectors do have glitches, that include images that are plagued by flickers, sudden color shifts, and other technical glitches. The larger units that are designed for public presentations like the CS-Mark 12 hologram projector, which can produce images up to five meters in diameter.
The input slots on the projectors are capable of accepting data disks, data dots, and other storage media, and interface ports that accept direct feeds from droids and computers. The CS-Mark 12's operators can control sound, playback speed, projection size, and image rotation speed, and if wanted, the operators can use the optional two-dimensional image mode.
The CS-Mark 12 is built with specialized programs to edit, enhance, and manipulate the recordings. Holograms are used for more than just communications; they can be used for entertainment, and are predominantly broadcast through planetary and subspace networks.
In addition to broadcasting entertainment, hologram projectors are used for hologram films, three-dimensional sculptures, and three-dimensional paintings, which are extremely popular, and these units can also be used for games like the strategy game Dejarik.
A holocam is a recording device that captures holographic imagery for broadcast and/or archive purposes. They are often used in security applications. Also called a holorecorder, these devices come in all manner of shapes and configurations.
Holocams are often fitted with small repulsorlifts and limited droid intelligence to serve as roving cameras for covering large events. The incredibly fast Boonta Eve Podrace was recorded by fast-moving holocams that tracked the action, and transmitted their imagery to small hand-held viewscreens. During sessions of the Galactic Senate hovering holocams provide close-up views of speakers to many different members.
Merr-Sonn manufactures a number of holocam models for the Imperial military, specifically for security purposes. The military issue 57C unit is a more advanced model, equipped with special multiphase visual adjustment features, motion sensors, audio pickups, and signal transmitters.
