Sale of Large Collection of Early Space Covers Continues

Spaceflori has been selling a wonderful collection (the Ulrich Loeffler Space collection) on eBay over the last couple of months. Amongst many early and rare Space covers are an amazing range of early and sometimes unique Recovery Ship covers. Some of them have been illustrated previously. The lastest offerings include an equally wonderful range of Recovery Ship covers. As previously mentioned these have brought high prices recently with a number of serious bidders for most items. However, this time, the picture was mixed. The extremely rare covers still brought high prices while the more common covers with unusual cachets brought solid prices. However, quite a few of the moderately rare covers went cheaply and thus there were a number of bargins. Examples include a number of Captain's covers which brought 1/4 or less than I expected, a very nice MA-9 PRS cover with the black cachet and signed by the Captain (a surprisingly hard cover to find) sold for a low $19.50 and a rare Gemini 5 Beck Crew cover sold for only $13.40, a real steal!! Below I've shown some of the rarer covers.

This suspect MR-3 USS Lake Champlain (the postmark appears to be offset printed) sold for $241.50

This classic MR-3 USS Lake Champlain Riser fake sold for $118.35

This very rare MOL USS La Salle Reurn to Port cover sold for $178.50

This extremely rare (first one seen) MR-3 USS Newman K. Perry cover sold for $141.50 even though it had an extremely late postmark!

This very nice Gemini 11 Captain's cover signed by various people was the only Captain's cover to do well. It sold for $217.50

This nice Gemini 7 PRS cover with both a Navy and a ship's cachet sold for $130.50. Note that the date is actually the Gemini 6A recovery date!

This amazing cover is from the USS Eaton, postmarked just a few days after being part of the Recovery Force for MR-1A. No covers are known with an earlier date! In fact no other covers are known from this mission!! Along with a 1946 USS Valley Forge cover it sold for $161.50.

This was the surprise packet of the lot when it sold for $131.50, despite being a standard Beck printed SRS cover with a signature of theship's Captain and another officer. Again, covers with signatures are bringing good prices.

  The One That Got Away

Most collectors know that feeling. You place what you think is a good bid on a rare item and wait. At the last moment someone outbids you. It really was worth a bit more, you think! If only you had bid a bit higher! Look at the lot of 5 MA-6 covers below. What do you think they are worth? $60? $80? $120? Look again. There are 3 extremely rare covers (I made the mistake of only noticing two). I therefore bid $254 and was outbid with seconds to go. The sale price was $259. And yes, I know, I should have bid more!!
