First Half

The team is greeted onto the pitch with a tremendous roar from the crowd, the atmosphere is very tense. For the first half Carlisle are playing towards the Waterworks End. Plymouth kick off.

3 minutes Plymouth get the first corner of the game, Gibbs put the ball in the penalty area for Glass to easily catch.

The match appears nervous and scrappy, Steve McCall  controlling the Plymouth defence.

8 minutes At around the eight minute mark the crowd hear that Richard Scott has scored for Peterborough in the seventh minute, the  crowd noise is fantastic and the news soon travels down onto the pitch.

9 minutes Richard Tracey is bundled off the ball near the corner flag on the East Stand side.  Anthony takes the free kick. The ball is whipped in  and Tracey's powerful header hits the crossbar. The resulting corner is cleared.

10 minutes Dobie is fouled by the Plymouth number 3 Beswetherick. The free kick is taken by Anthony just outside the centre of the D. The ball sails harmlessly over the crossbar.

13 minutes Brightwell boots forward and Tracey looks as though he is through on goal only to be denied by a last ditch tackle by Heathcote.

19 minutes Gibbs makes a strong run and Whitehead's only option is to put the ball out for a corner. Barlowe puts in a right footed inswinger from the Paddock  side of the pitch. Carlisle clear the ball only as far as McCall who passes the ball to Barlowe on the left. Searle is deemed to have fouled Barlowe and Plymouth have a free kick. The ball passes in front of goal and Ian Stevens heads it away for a corner on the East Stand side. Gibbs takes, the ball going across the face of goal and out for another corner, this time on the Paddock side. Barlowe puts the ball into the box and has it headed back by Heathcote. Barlowe runs with the ball and shoots from the edge of the 18yard box. Glass makes a good save turning the ball out for another corner. This time  the inswinger is cleared by Hopper.

22minutes Searle is again pulled up for a foul and this time receives a talking to from the ref. The resulting free kick is taken on the right hand side level with Carlisle 18 yard box. The free kick is headed out by Bowman and cleared by Brightwell.

25 minutes Carlisle get a throw in about 20 yards from goal. Hopper sends the ball to Stevens who  passes straight back to Hopper. Hopper then lifts a great ball to Dobie who is running into the penalty  area. Dobie heads the ball down and the bounce beats the keeper. The ball is in the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed as the referee felt that Dobie was impeding his defender. ( I've watched this on tape over and over again and still  feel the goal should not have been disallowed. However as we would have been denied the fairytale ending and  as otherwise the referee had a good game, I shan't complain - Barb)

27 minutes A Plymouth defender miscontrols the ball and the the ball goes out for a corner.  Anthony takes and it is headed across goal by Brightwell but is easily cleared by Plymouth.

32 minutes Glass takes a free kick half way inside his own half. Hopper rises  for the long ball and is fouled by Heathcote a few yard outside the box.  The free kick is taken by Searle but goes straight into the wall, Anthony collects the rebound and shoots over the bar.

35 minutes Anthony crosses the ball. Its cleared but only as far as Prokas who shoots over the bar.

37 minutes Searle makes a determined run towards the box and is brought down by Barlowe who gets a yellow card. Carlisle have another free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Anthony takes and it rebounds off the wall and is cleared  for a corner on the Paddock side. Anthony  puts the ball in the box, Dobie runs in but heads over the bar.

39 minutes Dobie wins a corner on the Paddock side. Anthony buts the ball in the box, Brightwell heads it strongly towards goal. It is cleared of the line by Beswetherick.

41 minutes Glass makes a long kick towards Dobie. Dobie doesn't control the ball and McCall flicks sideways towards Gibbs. The ball is in space and Hopper and Gibbs both run in at speed for the ball.   It is immediately  obvious that Gibbs is in trouble from the collision  The game is stopped whilst he  receives medical attention and is stretchered off with a broken leg.

45 minutes Bastow replaces  Gibbs. Four minutes of injury time to play. The crowd hear that Darren Roberts has equalised for Scarborough.

51 minutes Half time

Second Half

46 minutes Anthony hooks the ball through to Tracey who is held and wins a free kick a few yards from the 18 yard line. Anthony takes the free kick, it is headed on by Brightwell and comes off Stevens chest to produce a good save from Plymouth keeper Dungey. the resulting corner is easily cleared by Plymouth.

47 minutes Plymouth break  down the right through Lee Phillips who crosses the ball in to Crowe. He shoots over the crossbar.

48 minutes McCall in defence passes to Phillips who runs with the ball forward to the D. He shoots along the ground, through the defenders and the ball is in the net. 0 - 1 to Plymouth. The atmosphere in the ground goes cold. Chants of KNIGHTON OUT replace cheers for the team.

53 minutes Barlowe breaks and passes to McCall. McCall tricks Brightwell who is adjudged to have fouled. Plymouth take a free kick just outside the corner of the 18 yard box, Paddock side. McCall effortlessly swings in a left footed kick which is headed over the bar by a Plymouth player.

55 minutes Carlisle make their first substitution. Tracey is replaced by Bagshaw.

56 minutes Glass dribbles past a Plymouth player, then directs a long ball to Bagshaw on the left. Bagshaw cuts inside, the ball is cleared forwards by a Plymouth player to Stevens who passes the ball across goal, despite Plymouth being unable to clear the ball  United are unable to find a way through.

57 minutes Searle has the ball by the corner flag. Ashton manages to win the ball, Prokas tries to win the ball back. Prokas appears to be wrestled to the ground by Ashton. Anthony runs in  and a scuffle ensues. Things quickly calm down helped by Dungey. Searle receives attention  for a knock from the original tackle on his right knee.

61 minutes Anthony runs with ball from central to the left of the 18yard box, Avoiding the  attentions of  three defenders he puts the ball into the box. McCall heads the ball out, straight to Brightwell who is running in about 20 yards from goal. Brightwell's left foot shot, hit low, goes into the net. 1 -1  A few fans come onto the pitch but are quickly cleared and the game resumes.

65 minutes Plymouth break and Barstow races into the box, the  ball is expertly put into touch by Whitehead. Barstow takes the resulting corner which is headed over the bar.

66 minutes Anthony takes a free kick midway in the Plymouth half. His ball into the box bobbles around before being put out for a corner. The corner is cleared as far as Hopper who shoots wide.

69 minutes Guinan has a weak shot easily saved by Glass.

72 minutes Carlisle make a second substitution, Searle comes off and Peter Clarke comes on.

73 minutes The ball is crossed into the box and Crowe has a half chance to shoot. The danger is cleared into touch by Bowman. Before the corner can be taken Carlisle make their third substitution. Bass comes on for Hopper. At the same time  for Plymouth McCall is replaced by McGovern. When the corner is taken it is cleared by United.

77 minutes Glass takes a free kick and puts a lovely  ball to Dobie on the edge of the box. The ball is cleared for a corner by Plymouth.  The resulting corner sees Plymouth struggling to clear, the ball falls to Clarke who knocks it back into the box, Dungey punches it clear.

81 minutes Plymouth make their last substitution. Lee Phillips is replaced by Wotton.

84 minutes Stevens goes on a strong run for goal. He manages to  ride a strong challenge  only to have the ball taken of him by Dungey.

85 minutes Plymouth win a corner which is taken short with no effort on goal, they now appear happy to run down the clock.

90 minutes  The board shows 4 minutes of injury time. The announcer on the tannoy gives the result of the Scarborough game 1-1. He shouts for the crowd to get behind the team, the fans respond, the tension is nearly unbearable.

92 minutes  Dobie shoots on the turn, for a few seconds some of the crowd think the balls in the net but it hits the side netting.

93 minutes Anthony takes a knock and the game is stopped whilst he gets attention.

94 minutes Stevens passes to Dobie just outside the box. Dobie puts the ball against a Plymouth player and the ball goes out for a United corner on the East Stand side. As Anthony goes across to take the corner Glass looks across at Nigel Pearson who shrugs and waves him up.  Anthony puts a good ball into the box. Dobie rises and heads strongly towards goal directly to the keeper. Dungey uses two hands to parry the ball down. It lands a few feet from goal at the feet of unmarked Jimmy Glass. With his right foot Glass kicks the ball into the back of the net. GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL  2 -1 to Carlisle United.  A mass pitch invasion follows, fans  cannot contain the huge relief they feel. Glass eventually manages to make his way back to his own goal and  the pitch clears for the game to restart.

96 minutes The game restarts and almost immediately the whistle blows for FULL TIME
