HACKETT WINS COMMONWEALTH GAMES BRONZE!

Nicole Hackett has won the bronze medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games Women's triathlon.

Nicole's 2:03:42.81 was 24 secs behind Canada's Carol Montgomery (2:03:17.86) Welsh triathlete Leanda Cave (2:03:37.17) won the silver medal.

In rainy and slippery conditions, it was a tough day for the other Australian women,Michellie Jones finished 6th after a slow T1 which left her 'behind the 8 ball', and despite a rumoured (I say 'rumoured' as she didn't really want to talk about it! ... but who knows...) foot injury, Loretta Harrop was up with the leaders until a puncture mid-way through the bike leg left her well off the pace and in 'no-mans land' with regards to making a pack with other athletes ... she later withdrew with bad cramp. It is probably disappointing for the girls, perhaps knowing that they can race better when things are all a-ok on the day - but I don't mean to disrespect them or anything, they gave it there best shot and what more can you ask for??

Nicole and Loretta got out to a typically dominant start, up with the leaders on the swim, before the mis-fortune on the bike that I've already touched on, Michellie Jones also had a great swim.

Towards the end of the bike leg, the main group of five or six, which included Nic, Carol Montgomery and Leanda Cave, British champion Jodie Swallow took a heavy fall off the bike, which ended her hopes of a medal.

Montgomery was always going to be the one to beat coming into the run - the 10,000 specialist showed why she is just that. Hackett and Cave went stride-for-strike with the Canadian before she pulled away from them on the second lap of three to win convincingly by just under 20 secs.

It left Nic and Cave to fight it out for the silver, with Cave prevailing to grab the silver by about 5 seconds.

Congrats Nic on your Comm Games Bronze - no doubt all your family, friends (and fans! ;)) are very proud of you!
GO COASTIE!!

Stay tuned for a full wrap tommorrow (hopefully!) - this is my 'rushed job'! :p

CANADIAN TRIATHLETE TESTS POSITIVE TO BANNED SUBSTANCE

Canada's Kelly Guest has tested positive to to the banned substance nandrolone and has been sent home from the Commonwealth Games.

Guest, who lives and trains in Australia, has been rocked by the alligations and does not know how the drug got into his system, he has asked for his B sample to be tested.

The following is from The Courier Mail (QLD)

Triathlete returns positive drug test

CANADIAN Kelly Guest is the first athlete to be sent home from the Commonwealth Games after failing a drugs test.

The 25-year-old triathlete tested positive to the banned substance nandrolone after he was tested at the Triathlon World Cup in Edmonton on July 14.

Guest, who lives and trains in Australia during the Canadian winter, has requested his B sample be tested.

He accepted the decision to return to his home in Victoria – site of the 1994 Games – in a response which contrasts vividly with Australian management's defiant handling of shooter Phillip Adams's positive test.

Regarded as an emerging star in triathlon, Guest finished second to Olympic champion Simon Whitfield at the Canadian championships in June.

Fighting back tears yesterday, Guest said: "Anyone that knows me knows that in my opinion drugs have no place in sport.

"I'm proud of my accomplishments as an athlete and a person and I don't know how this has happened. I'm going home today to be with my family."

Guest said he had been taking "at least six food supplements" but had "no idea which one led to traces of nandrolone being found".

"Most of the things I'm taking are what anyone would take to be healthy – vitamin C and vitamin E," he said.

Clearly shocked after being told of the positive swab, Guest said: "I had just gone for a run and when I got back to the games village an official took me aside and told me I had tested positive.

"How did I feel? I don't think that's a question that needs to be answered."

Guest's coach, Lance Watson, said: "It's a trace amount (of nandrolone) in his system rather than a gross performance-enhancing amount that some athletes have had in the past.

"It seems like it's the little guys who get caught using cough syrup, while the professionals (drug cheats) get away with it.

"It's always someone like Kelly who gets hung out to dry and his national federation is standing by him 100 per cent."
