In the news most readers of
this site would also be looking for, the story on Nicole
Hackett is she was among a handful of athletes who did not
finish the event, with the split times unavailable just at
the moment, I'm not sure where exactly Nicole's race ended
or anything surrounding her performance.
As the article published in The
Australian on Friday reports,
this race was always a bit of an unknown quantity to Nicole,
what with the birth of her son, Joel, a little over 2 months
ago, and not having raced since the Australian Championships
in March, it probably wouldn't be too unreasonable to think
lack of race fitness could very well be a telling factor ...
Although I believe it's definately not a case of 'game over'
- granted I have not seen/heard a thing on Nicole's
performance except those three letters 'DNF' in the paper
this morning - but it would have been an absolute herculean
effort for Nic to get up and win this weekend, just racing
this weekend is a victory in itself in my humble opinion,
with the second qualifier to be raced on Feb. 2, there is
still a good few weeks of training to be had ... as it has
been proven many times before 'never question the heart of a
champion', I know, I know,
right about now I'm probably sounding very bias in my
views :-) but hey ... you gotta believe! :-)

HARROP + THOMPSON
= AUS OLYMPIANS '04
Sunday, 21 December 2003
Loretta Harrop (QLD) and Simon
Thompson (ACT) yesterday were the first Australian
triathletes to qualify for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games,
both winning round one of the Accenture Triathlon
Series.
In the first of two races
which double as selection for the 'Games, Harrop and
Thompson were both resounding victors over the 1.5k swim,
40k bike and 10k run, on a testing course which is said to
have the toughest bike leg of any triathlon course in
Australia, tellingly this is where both made their moves in
the hot conditions of Coffs Harbour.
In the women's race Loretta
was a customary leader on the swim, before exploding on the
bike leg, getting stronger and stronger the further she rode
to enter T2 with a massive 3.5 min lead over the chase pack.
Bringing it home on the run, Loretta could afford to cruise
home, eventually slowing to a walk up the finishing chute as
she approached the finishing line, high-fiving spectators,
friends and family as she saluted skywards in memory of her
brother Luke, finishing in 2 hours 18 mins 36s, as she
hugged her father Russell, in what must have been
reminiscent of another emotion-packed race the day she won
in Canberra to qualify for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
"It wasn't relief I was feeling
when I crossed," Harrop is
quoted in today's papers post-race, "It was: 'Bite me, everyone'. A lot of people
wrote me off, you know. But I don't think I've given my best
yet. It's great for me to make people stand up and take
notice."
Well done Loretta!.
Promising junior, 19-year-old
Maxine Seear of Brisbane finished second (2:19.08) after
passing 2003 World Champion Emma Snowsill (third - 2:19.12)
on the run. Michellie Jones was fourth with Rina Hill
fifth.
I'm sorry to have to wrap this
update up having reported nothing on Simon Thompson's
outstanding win the the Men's race, but of course a big
Congratulations to Simon. An awesome story of an athlete who
had to be talked into continuing on with triathlon this
year, and took out a $5000 loan from a local bank in his
hometown of Canberra to fund racing the overseas season. Be
sure to check out the link to the story below in the
meantime, until I can have a more detailed look at the Men's
race.

LORETTA HARROP
DOMINATES IN COFFS HARBOUR
Saturday, 20 December
2003
Loretta Harrop has won today's
Women's race in round 1 of the Accenture Triathlon Series
which doubled as Olympic selection.
Speaking on ABC Radio,
Triathlon Australia's media man Ian Hanson spoke of
Loretta's performance as a dominating, as she lead the swim,
and got stronger and stronger throughout the bike leg to go
into T2 with a lead of a whopping 3.5 mins!!! before
bringing it home on the run to finish in 2:18.36 and be the
first selected for the 2004 Australian Triathlon team for
the Athens Olympics. Congratulations goes to Loretta!
Promising junior Maxine Seear
finished second (2:19.08) after passing 2003 World Champion
Emma Snowsill (third - 2:19.12) on the run. Michellie Jones
was fourth.
No news on Hackett fared, but
stay tuned to ABC radio (702 AM, Sydney - 92.5 Central Coast
or listen online)
for all the latest, where their Grandstand sports progam
will be crossing back to Ian Hanson through out the
afternoon for news on the Men's race, which begins 1pm
AEST.
In light of her result today,
I'm lead to believe after my quick read of the selection
policy that Seear will be added to Triathlon Australia's
Olympic shadow team (full team listed here.)
And as I said, a big
Congratulations to Loretta Harrop - our first 2004
Olympian!
