Is what we see on Tv reflect the Reality of our
World???? Do these images tell us the truth about certain groups
or races?

Looking at
famous Asian Americans......
Margaret Cho is one
of the most well known Korean American comedian. Many Korean Americans
see her representation of Koreans as negative. Cho talks about issues
such race, culture, sexuality, and life that may offend many viewers.
Due to the fact that there is a minimal amount of representation of Korean
Americans, this unilateral view may affect Korean American women negatively.
Let the voices be heard...
Question: What do you think about the representations
of Asian Americans in the Media? Do these images reflect the reality
of these groups?
-
"I think that Asians are slammed when it comes to media representations.
Every time I see an Asian person on screen he or she is either a kung fu
master, foreign exchange student, a mistress..all that nonstuff.
Why can't our real lives be shown? Everytime I meet a white person,
they assume that I know how to karate chop is head off. I think that
it is very negative in its' own ways. What people see on tv has a
lot to do with what they learn about the world and people around them.
Whatevers."

"Man I don't know why Asian people trip so much about the
characters that Asian people play!! They are only for entertainment,
they should just kick back. They are making a big deal!"

"If you look at all the shows about the depictions of Anglo-Americans,
they are so complex and real. They have boyfriend problems, jobs,
friends to lean onto, careers...basically, they are real human beings surrounded
by real life issues. But, if you look at the depictions of Asians,
they are so stereotypical and racist. We also have to know that there
is so much history behind these stereotypes. They don't just come
from nowhere. These complex ideologies are rooted in the long history
of racism, hate, and injustice that Asians had to face."

-
"I could see why Asians could get angry about the images
that are put out. If I was only shown in certain ways, I would be
pissed off. I mean, the only reason why I would think that kung fu
and Asian men go together is because of all those movies and shows.
Because I have Asian friends, I know that they are not all about that Jackie
Chan type of ordeal. It can be harmful."

-
"We Asians need to get ourselves into realistic roles and
make our marks in the media industry. Even though there will be barriers
in those institutions, there are always solutions to problems in the world.
This comes with great effort." -Korean
American female, 32
