The Philips 320 watt pulse start lamp shown here is a new generation of metal halide lamps that are rapidly gaining in popularity in the USA. However, part of the reason pulse start lamps were developed is to allow the elimination of the starting probe, which frees up the arc tube ends to become narrower. Arc tubes with narrow ends greatly increase efficency and improved lumen manteniance, and is the standard design found in pulse start metal halide lamps made by GE, Venture, and Osram Sylvania. However this Philips 320 watt lamp, while OK quality-wise, is laughable because they chose to adopt the ordinary pinched ends found in standard probe start metal halide lamps. So other than faster re-strike time, this lamp offers no benefits over probe start lamps.
