Here is an extremely rare 250 watt clear self ballasted mercury vapor lamp. Lamps below 450w are generally phosphor coated, largely because these lamps are intended for indoor lighting where good color rendition is desired and this is achieved by utilizing phosphors. I lit this lamp up and the mercury lines from the arc tube were noticeably weak, largely because it is a small arc tube mounted next to a bright ballast filament. Still, it was enough for a cool 4000K color temperature. Today, 100w and 160w self ballasted lamps for reptiles are offered in clear, but that is another story.
