According to many experts the number of persons in a
country is considered as the wealth or asset of that country and most of the ancient scholars is
of the view that large population is an important factor for the economic development of a
country. A famous French economist has mentioned that man is more precious than the worth of
Jewels and gold mines and is a source of all productive activities. To study the population of
a country, the residents in that country are counted which is called census. In every developed
country. There is a special time for conducting census. In our country, like the other developed
countries of the world, time is fixed. I.e. after every 10 years there is "CENSUS". After the
establishment of Pakistan, first census was conducted in March 1951. According to which the
population of our country at that time was approximately 338 lakh i.e. 3 Crore 38 Lakh. Like
wise the second census of our country was 430 Lakh i.e. 4 Carore and 30 Lakh KW. After that
third census was performed in March 1972. According to this 5th census of our country was
conducted in 1981. According to this the population of our country was 842 lakh i.e. 8 crore
and 42 lakh persons. 5th Census of our country was expected in March 1991,. But due to many
unavoidable circumstances it should not be conducted on time. So according to 5th census the
population in March 1998, our country has increased to approximately 13 crore 6 lakh.But
according to latest estimates till march, 2000, our population has increased has increased to
1370 lakhs.
