Diadem #3: Book of Magic

From Rawn they travel to Dondar, on the Inner Circut. It is a world where mythological animals run rampent. In between battling the Wizard of Elements Garonath, they manage to befriend the unicorns Thunder, his wife Nova, and his daughter Flame. After defeating the wizard and gaining the trust of the entire unicorn herd, they fall victim to a spell that takes over their bodies and forces them to walk into a Portal: destination unknown!

The trio arrive on the world of Jewel, the very core of the Diadem. There, they discover the master pupettier behind all their misfortunes: Sarman. Sarman has seized control of the Diadem, only to find that with being the most powerful magic-user means he is trapped on the core planet!

In order to leave, he has created a minature magical representation of the Diadem that will manage the flow of magic without requiring his prescence on Jewel. However, in order to operate it properly, he needs to drain the life essences of a magic-user from each world in the Diadem and bind it to the Analog. Score, Helaine and Pixel are the last three he needs. (This is why the magic has been disruptive -- the model is incomplete and is throwing everything off-balance)

By the skin of their teeth, the trio defeat Sarman, thereby inheriting all of his magical powers and his curse: to maintain the balance of the Diadem and prevent the destruction of the universe, at least one of them must remain on Jewel at all times. (This is a horrible punishment, as Jewel is a desolate world without any life. Imagine Pluto, only warmer)

Before they can even work on fixing this problem, they face one last challenge and discover the mystery behind it all: the reason why they are such outstanding magic-users (even though they are from the Rim worlds where magic is practically non-existent) is because they are the reincarnation of the former tyrinical rulers of the Diadem, The Triad.

Their past-selves had used magic to make themselves reborn in order to come back and defeat the usurper Sarman. However, they placed a latent spell to merge their old personalities/psyches with their new bodies once Sarman was defeated. Naturally, Score, Helaine and Pixel are not going for this.

Just barely, they manage to defeat the remnants of their former selves by trapping them along with part of their magic into the Analog. The magic in the Diadem is restored to its proper balance, and none of them forced to remain on Jewel.
