Samuel HARRILL was born in Virginia. He came to Tryon County, N.C. (known today as Rutherford Co., N.C.) with his father Housand HARRILL in 1786. In 1797 he married Susannah HAMRICK also born in Virginia. They followed in their parent's footsteps and were successful farmers and devoted church members.
They were members of Sandy Run Baptist Church and then transferred to Concord Baptist Church, in Bostic, N.C.
Samuel was interested in educating his children. He sponsored a private school with the help of William BAXTER, near the present town of Caroleen, N.C. The Master of this school for several years was a highly educated Frenchman.
Copies of three land grants two of which were issued on October 2, 1827.
The first being for 18 acres in the County of Rutherford; Grant No. 3394; Entry No. 2606; Book 137; Page No. 211.

Whereas, II, Samuel Harrill, Sr. having made my last Will and Testament bearing the date of 3rd of December 1853 and having made a devise to my grand-daughter Mary Ann LEE a daughter of my son James Harrill, and my mind has changed since that time as to my grand-daughter Mary Ann LEE, I do by this writing which I declear to be a Codicil to my last Will and Testament to be taken and construed as a part there of that is that Mary Ann LEE is to have no share of my estate at my death until her husband James D. LEE or the sd. Mary Ann LEE pays unto my estate forty five dollars to the person authorized to receive same, and the said forty five dollars is to a part of my estate and distributed as my other property.
