My mother read these books to me while I was still in elementary school. I must say, it didn't encourage me to want to have any kids real soon. The author's account of these two small boys who go to stay with their single uncle while their parents go on vacation has often made me wonder if he was drawing upon his own personal experience. The story about Budge and Toddie who manage to maintain their angelic and innocent quality all the while driving their poor uncle who loves them dearly to the very brink of insanity is hilarious reading. |

A four book set that you can't simply read just once. You can always find something new every time you read them. But first, I suggest you also invest in a copy of The Silmarillion (edited by Christopher Tolkien Random House, Incorporate ISBN: 0 345 32581 8) because, even though it was not published in J.R.R.'s lifetime, its origins stretch back to a time before The Hobbit. This great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all of Tolkien's other works. The Hobbit was caught up in what Tolkien called "the branching acquisitive theme" begun in The Silmarillion, and eventually The Lord of the Rings emerged from this as well. I also highly recommend checking out the videos featuring Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell about The Masks of God from your public library if they have them The Masks Of God Penguin Books Ltd. |

You may have seen the recent movie by this title. I have to admit that I was impressed, which doesn't happen often. Most movies really pale in comparison to the books they come from, and more often than not they just plain suck, but I am happy to say this one doesn't. I do still believe the book is the best way to go though. My mother read this one to me when I was very young, and I fell in love with it. The Secret Garden J By HarperCollins Publishers |
