"RAISING THE STARS AND STRIPES"
Citizen Tribune - May 22, 2004
Matthew Knight and Ryan Herald have been raising the American flag at Union Heights Elementary School all school year, but it is no ordinary flag-raising.
The boys go through their own military-type ceremony each morning and evening as they raise and lower the flag.
Nobody even knew this was happening until one morning the principal and school secretary watched from their windows and noticed the reverence with which these boys did their job, not realizing anyone was looking.
Matthew's father is in the National Guard and will be deployed (possibly yo to Iraq on June 26). His father taught Matthew to have great respect for
his country's flag, and he taught him how to handle and take care of a flag.
Matthew took the flag job very seriously, and he has taught three other boys in the 5th grade the proper procedure for flag-raising.
