Multiple Defrag Programs Reviews! |
As you probably know, laptop computers these days can get burning hot on the bottomside of them, especially if they are working hard. Laptop maufacturers design them so that they can handle these temperatures. However, not when the computer is laying on a confined space where no air can move under the bottom of the laptop such as a bed, padded chair, etc. If your into overclocking, this product is essential. However, it doesn't decrease the CPU temp more than a couple of degrees Farenheit.
Upon opening the box I saw that the device was indeed quite thin. It measured to be a bit over 0.5inches thick 9 inches wide and 11inches 12/16thslong. It looks quite stylish. You could even call it your laptop mod it look's so good. It can make your laptop look much better On the backside of the device it gave the technical specifications: 5v Power 1.3W Speed3000RPM noise21dBA. It does not even mention the 12v power option, which I saw repeatedly on the web for this model.. so now I am confused if I can give it 12v DC power to it without blowing it up! Wow is this company ignorant!
I plugged the device into the USB port of my laptop and I flipped the switch on the front of the device to the 'on' position. It comes to life! the 3 Blue LEDs are for show only, even though I heard on a review online that each LED indicates whether each fan is running correctly. How did I figure this out? Well,... I stalled all of the fans by pressing down on the vent holes lightly, and the lights continued to stay as bright as before. 0 correspondence, the lights are just for show. They do look good however, and are very bright when running with 12v power. Also, I have heard that LEDs of this technology are supposed to last upwards of MTBF=22years!
The cooling experience= I felt the air being sucked from the top of the device to the back and it didn't seem like much air
was being moved, and of course it was very quiet, ideal for any environment where very little noise can be made, besides the occasional hum of a CD-ROM drive.
I put the device under my laptop
(which is normally hot on the bottom when crunching seti@home). I let it run for an hour and then I felt the temperature,
and I noticed a little bit of temperature difference but not much. I doubt that it would of increased my laptop's life-span under normal conditions.
However once again, if the the bottom of the laptop is confined and no heat can escape from the bottom, then you have a problem and you must have some solution such as this product. Burning hot temperatures under a laptop are fine unless it is extaordinarily hot. I'm unsure if that makes since, but bottom line: Laptop's are heat tough and if there's air moving under the computer, it shouldn't 'overheat'. If the top (keyboard/battery/HD section) of the laptop is burning hot, then you should get a solution, because that will shorten the life of your HD. If it is just the keyboard section, then it should be fine, unless the HD is in there as well. Right under the keyboard is the huge heatsink for the CPU, where most of the heat is created in most cases.
I brought it to school with me and whenever I moved the laptop with the cooler on the bottom, the fans hit the fan grill! Eventually one of the fans got loose from the device chassis, jammed, and now is irrepairable. The fan is off center and jammed.
I conclude that this device does help somewhat with cooling and does it's job well at removing heat from the bottom of a laptop especially on top of a confined area, keeping the computer at a relatively comfortable level. However, it won't last. It will break down 1. The plastic is too thin on the fan grill. 2. The fans will have a tendency to get loose from the device chassis. 3. It is made in China
I would personally buy the cooling fan that pops into the PCMCIA slot of your laptop and pumps ambient air into the laptop to keep it internally cool, which is far more important than worrying about the chassis temperature. It isn't like it is going to melt.
